Question on Russian armor

Need some info please:

1 What color primer was used on Russian armor

2 What overall color is Russian WWII armour (dark green???)

Bob

I don’t know about their use of primer, but I’ve used Model Master’s Russian Armor Green on my SU 100 and it looks good. From what I gather, there is so much variation on the ‘correct’ tone of green that as long as you don’t use red, you’re OK.

Russians… ANY green should look fine. Just not interior green…

Thank you, I keep looking on the net and cant find anything on primer usage. I want to do a really weatherd SU-76m.

Bob

Maybe a heavily weathered whitewash over whatever green you finally choose? That would negate the need for a primer, right?

But you might get away with priming it in either a dull yellow or dull red, or even a dark grey with a taste of brown in it for dull, unpolished steel look.

Ditto to what Dre said, just use Model Masters Russian Armor Green. Saves you the problem of mixing tons of paints untill you get the right shade.

So what SU-76M kit are using?..the MiniArt kit? (if you are, I did a WIP on the build so it may or may not help)

MG te kit is an older DML (Alan) kit. DML #9001. Reason I wanted to know primer color was I planned to do a heavily chipped paint scheme. I did see a very interesting white wash. It was almost a pokadot pattern.

Watch out Bob, I’ve heard that this is a nightmare of a kit. Be afraid.

Tiger; Im already afraid very afraid. I have WIP pics and already have had to use some sheet styrene to fill a major gap on the top part of the hull. Ill post as I move along.

The official color is called 4B0 green. Essentially a medium to dark olive green. Reading up about it, shows there seems to have been serious variation in the color. Anywhere from FS 34151, to 34102. So pick a shade you like and enjoy.

IF you prefer acrylics then Russian Green from Vallejo is the best choice.

White Ensign Models also produce a Russian Green if you like enamels.

Some have said: just green. Not so. Some modellers have chosen to make it a bright, forest green when in reality, they were definitely DARK green. Yes, you have leeway for the shade – but not that much leeway.

I was thinking XF-58 Olive Green, looks a little dark but I can lighten it up a bit.
