Bit puzzled by this colour… Both testors and Revell show 8017 as a dark chocolate brown. However, when i see sideviews of german panzers i see a far lighter, reddish brown. Can i or can’t i use the dark version?
Richard
EDIT: FYI i am attempting a three tone brown and olive over yellow scheme…
I use just Tamiya Red-Brown… Keep in mind that German tanks that were camouflaged over the dark yellow in the field were done so with a gasoline-soluable paint that, depending on the mix-ratio, could be anywhere from dark chocolate brown to a rust-color brown… So there’s no real “official” shade of red-brown… Just eyeball it and you should be golden…
[#ditto] Lots of variation is possible. The Testors color is labelled “Schokoladenbraun” and will be very dark coming straight out of the bottle. I personally prefer to mix my own rotbraun using a 50-50 mix of Military Brown/Leather in the Model Master enamel line.
I agree with HvH, Tamiya XF-64 is a very good match to RAL 8017.
XF-58 Olive Green
XF-60 Dark Yellow
XF-64 Red Brown
Are the coulours I would use for most German WWII 3 colour schemes.
You might want to break them with XF-55 for a paler shade, or dimm them with the same in a light overcoat.
I realize that this is not quite the answer that you where looking for since the Testor and Revell are likely to be enamels, you do not want to mix acrylics and enamels as it makes your choice of washes more difficult.
Mixing paint-types isn’t an issue for washes if you spray on a clear coat after the main colors are done… I do it all the time. Just overcoat it with your favorite clear coat and have at it…
Very true, I am refering to my own building steps which might be an an ‘old timers’ sequence of events in terms of weathering technique. I will continue learning
Thanks for the info guys. I already had the idea that RAL 8017 was a bit of a “dark” science [;)]. I just wanted to know if the dark chocolate colour was “wrong”…
The reason i ask is because revell has a range of enamels that are ready for airbrushing straight out of the bottle and their 8017 (number 84) is a dark variant, just like the testors…
I looked at their paint chart and think No. 85 Brown is a closer shade to the red/brown… No. 84 is Leather Brown and not even close. 85 couls stand being a skosh lighter shade as well, but it’s real close as is…
