Just wondering with figure sets such as any DML set with their box titles like “German Sturmpioneer (Kursk 1943)”, if you were to make a diorama with such figures or complete sets from one box does the diorama and all associated vehicles etc need to be set in that time and place?
Or can the figuers be painted as necessary to be accurately set in another time and place? For example - taking the above stated box set (maybe because the poses are what I’m looking for) and painted/weathered to be set in normandy '44 witout sacrificing historical accuracy (with possibly having to change a few weapons or something)?
Obviously you could not take say a winter set and place it in a differently seasoned setting.
Depends. You’d really need do do the specific research to find if the type of uniform was in use in the different setting/time frame. Also, just because 4-6 figures are packaged together and given a title, doesn’t mean they’ll work well together in a dio/vignette.
Ya gotta be kiddin man! If you cant find a German set to fit your needs then I would be very surprised. You can get German fig kits and supplies for almost any time and place . If the time/place/unit is determined then diligent research is all that is needed, good luck with that. The model manufacturers have run out of German stuff to model ,they are into designs that never made it off the drafting table.
Ajlafleche: thank you, and by the way, I know that it is not usually feasible to use all figures in any given set. It was just an example for the hypothetical question.
Krow113: thank you too. I haven’t dealt with dioramas and figures very much at all. I knew DML and other manufacturers made a lot of US and German 1/35 figure sets but didn’t know that they covered almost every campaign, soldier type etc. Haven’t been in the game long enough to now these things.
Some Dragon figure sets are based on actual photos, and they often associate the set with a certain unit. But thee is nothing saying you can only use them in that scenario. As long as how you plan to use them is wiothin the right time frame then you can almost use them how you want. Though there are some sets which are more specific due to the uniforms being worn.
