Building base for 1/72 Tomcat, USS Carl Vinson, 1986.

I’ve noticed in older photos of carrier decks that the aircraft tie-down points were painted white. Does anyone know if they used to also paint the depression under the tie-down point white as well, or was it the same color as the deck? Seems like today they are all the same color as the deck, or maybe a dark gray. But for my dio I’m doing a mid-80s Carl Vinson.

The depressions were the same dark gray as the deck.

It just depends on the ship and the time. Those I’ve seen painted white, have been painted in the depression too. In 1/72 scale I’d suggest painting them a light gray. White may be too bright.

Thanks for the replies. I had an 80s or 90s era book on carrier aviation and it seemed the tie-down points were white with deck color depressions but I’ve seen a dio of an F-4J on the Coral Sea and the depressions were white. Based on my memory from the book I think I’ll go with white points with deck color depressions.
