I am working on a display base for a scifi build and am wanting to portray an asphalt highway. What color of paint or what mix of paints do any of you guys use to get that look? If it helps I am wanting it to look old, very very old
Heres one I did for my Bobber '47 . Think about the way a road looks ,less wear in the middle,oil stains in the middle etc. Go look at a highway as well. This was clay , I let it dry for a while, then with a Saran wrap ‘barrier’ I pressed it into a concrete garden step out side.Then after drying I went with lots of thinned acrylic washes for the layered effect.
I have used wet or dry sandpaper- very fine, like #600. I sometimes weather it by spraying with a very light gray. Other times I just use a gray paint for the asphalt, applied over black, airbrushed to shade it.
I used the gray FleckStone product on presentation board. I think it worked out well. I first used it for a display I was making for an SCCA event dinner, at a site we use that has very bleached asphalt. The color and pattern looked very close to the place we race:

It’s held up well to several applications, and pretty cheap. I demarked parking spaces with some white chalk, rub it a bit, and you have weathered parking lot paint.
