Question for ShermanFreak

Hi Sherm,

Okay, please forgive my ignorance regarding the Sherman tank, but I’ve noticed something about it since I’ve come over to the “Darkside”… I’ve noticed that the machine gun on top of the turret is mounted in between and behind the two hatches. Why? There has to be some explanation; I just can’t see it.

I’m not shermanfreak but I read it anyway! [:p]

Oh great … Derek read the post … now it’s tainted … how will I ever be able to answer the question now ?

I hope you’re happy Derek !!!

Actually it has been mounted in various locations during the life of the Sherman. On the early Shermans it was mounted on the commanders cupola. In later versions it was moved to between the 2 hatches so the .50 could be used from either hatch location.

I can see the value of placing it between the two hatches for accessability, but it is still placed behind the hatches. This would require the crew to expose themselves to engage frontal targets. Oh well… I can’t remember exactly who said the following quote regarding the Sherman, but it is painfully clear that it was true: “This tank (the Sherman) was built to take lives, not save them.” Apparently, crew safety and longevity was not a major concern! In a lot of cases an infantryman would operate the AA mount from the rear deck (or where ever was handy).

OOPS! I’m not shermanfreak! [:D][:P]

Man, you guys are nuts! [;)] That’s okay Derek…shhhh, take your medicine now… [:D] Oh man… But seriously, that’s good information. Thanks bro. I guess ShermanFreak isn’t as fast as you! [:p]
