Has anyone assembled Tamiya’s 1/25 T-34-85? What do you think of it?
I figure it’s an ancient model because T doesn’t show it at their website and any and all information about this kit is hard to come by.

Yup, I got one that I bought and built in 1995. It was actually the first model I built in Japan! It was reissued again as recently as 2001, I believe. Pretty cheap, too. Only 4,000 yen ($36 USD).
It’s got loads of accuracy problems with overall shapes, proportions, and dimensions, not to mention the problems with the detailing. If you’re a bolt-counting stickler for accuracy, then I’d say steer clear of this model.
But if you like big 1/25 tanks and want something that looks pretty much like a T-34/85, then I’d recommend it. It sure does go together easy enough.
I have a pic of my T-34 I’ll post when I get home tonight. I’ll look in my “History of Tamiya” book and see when this kit was orginally produced, too.
Are you sure that’s 1/25 and not 1/35? I’ve seen that kit and it’s not that great. It has the motorized holes in the bottom of the hull and many inaccuracies. Worst yet, it has the ugly vinyl tracks. Do yourself a favor and order Dragon’s newest release or the older one. I’ve heard raves about those kits.

You’re dead right about the 1/35 T-34s.
The 1/35 Tamiya T-34 is much more accurate than the 1/25 kit, though.
But the Dragon kits sure do rock![tup]

Can you show me a link to that “new” Dragon kit? I know about the T34/76 mod. 1940 that’s about to come out.
If you can recommend a really great T34/85 from Dragon or anybody else by all means do…

Monsterzero, I don’t know if you’re still interested in this kit anymore, but as I promised a couple of days ago, here are two pix of my old Tamiya 1/25 T-34, built over 8 years ago. In the second pic, it’s a bit hard to see, hiding behind Tamiya’s 1/25 Tiger I.
The T-34 kit made it’s debut in 1969.

The Tamiya 1/25 T-34/85 has the post WWII Polish manufacture type turret on it, which is its biggest problem. Second are the motorization ‘toy’ holes common on Tamiya kits. Next, the sponsons need to be filled in over the tracks. The detail isn’t up to today’s standards, but then the kit is from the late 1960’s (I think they were the huge price of $15 back then).
Finally, with a little work, it can be a nice kit. I’ve detailed one with an interior and such and it’s a pretty fun kit to work on. Tamiya also used the early individual link, workable tracks on these… vinyl links that are easy to assemble.

If you want a big T-34, wait for the Trumpeter 1/16th scale T-34. I’m not certain of the release date, but it should be soon. DML has the best T-34’s in 1/35th scale. I have a few and plan on buying more when the T-34/76’s come out.
Kaleu, is Dragon’s latest release the same as their earlier #6066 except with extra sprues or something? I didn’t see any difference at my LHS.

Oh ya its definantly ancient. I have it and with just a little work on the hull, it will turn out looking great. actually I built it along time ago but instead of throwing it out, I refurbished it. I love it now.
I just realized Kaleu that you said DML is coming out with a T-34/76. Is that the German version or a Russian version?

A picture and link of the DML T-34/76 was posted on the Allied discussion board on www.missing-lynx.com site. It was finished in russian colors, but I would be willing to bet that somebody will come out with a resin german cupola for the T-34/76. Have you seen the new T-34/85 that DML released this month?

I recently built the Tamiya T34/85 with the Russian Assault Infantry included.I don’t really worry about inaccuracies that much.Just as long as as it looks good at the end.The figures were a bonus and after knocking up a a suitable diorama I’m happy with the result.
