Hi guys, I bought Burnt Umber (looks preaty dark), and a Burnt Sienna (bit lighter) at Wal-Mart, but it’s by Falk Art, will it work for dusting, etc… How much will I have to thin it?
Thanks

Hi Anthony,
Not sure how dark those colors are but I usually use something more of of beige or even a light gray.
I thin it at least 50 / 50 and apply light coats. Making a few passes and wait to let the color dry to see how far I want to go with the effect.
I’ve found when you thin the paint quite a bit it can dry much darker than what you might think. That’s why I wait between the coats. Hope this helps.
Joe
thanks
If you’re talking about “dusting” those two are more for dark washes. A buff color or light earth would be better for "dusting. Panther 44 had it right too with maybe a light gray and biege and buff are pretty close.
I use tamiya buff thineed down alot.
heres how it turned out
I use thinned buff. BTW: RebeL---- be sure to spray behind your road wheels. Remeber that all that crap bounced off the road wheels and stuck behind them…[:p]
Ya I saw that when I painted it last summer, guess I got too lazy. But Im done taking her to copmetitions so It doesnt really matter to me. But I think I learn better when I make mistakes, cause I havent made the same one since![:)]
I like the acrylics at Wal-Mart. So cheap. They leave a rougher finish and scratch up more than the more quality brand paints, so I suggest also getting a rattle can of the acrylic sealer also at Wal-Mart. You can spray this stuff in a small container until you get a liquid out of it then spray it onto your model through an airbrush to seal the paint up real good.
When you say dusting, do you mean to say applying a layer of dust to your model? The two colours you bought are typically used in washes, not dusting. As mentioned above, one of the best paints to use for this is Tamiya Buff. Thin it down a lot. like 80% water/thinner to 20% paint. Apply in layers, allowing time between layers to dry, so you can see how your effect is comming along.
What kind of effect does a layer of buff add? Does it tone down the overall colors of the kit?
Deicide,
Yes, it will tone down the colors. You are trying to replicate dust, so imagine what your car would look like with a layer of dust. If it was a bright red car, it would tone down that color. Wouldn’t be as bright and appear to have somewhat of a flat finish.
Hey Rebel,
Nice looking Panzer IV.

Joe
