Gumi:
Two cents from a novice modeller: I have done one winter camo scheme on a German Fw190. I did this by first paintiung the splinter camo scheme, and then using a light, almost dry white acrylic…purposely leaving some areas heavier than others. This shows that the whitewash was an additional coat as the splinter camo can be seen through the white in some areas.
Also, for the level of “dirtiness”, you can weather to your personal taste in whichever method you prefer.
Just an idea. It was my first time, too, and I am satisfied with how it turned out.
I wouldn’t be surprised if you could use a piantbrush to apply the white on a few of the late-winter camoflauges. I’ve seen many pictures in books over the years, and towards the end the white got pretty bad.
When it comes to winterized camoflage, I really don’t think there’s any way to go wrong.
Just my two cents.
watch out for painting white over dark colors.
Here is a model i did by hand a while back, gave up on the 4th coat of white (enemal).
Winter camo on planes is very tough. Most were only temorary paints like water based washable so it did not take long for it to discolor and wear off on high contact area. I guess it depends on if you wish to depict the camo as just applied meaning it would look good to older paint which would be on horrible shape. There was just and article in FSM on a weathered a Mig 3 winter camo scheme. Definetly a lot of work and you skills definetly better be up to par! Soulcrusher
Mr. Base White is designed to completely cover any paint with just one or two coats, it has “super white” particles, or something, I’ve never used it though.
