Question about thinning paint for armor

Greetings,

Just finished painting the road wheels for my Tamiya Tiger I with Model Master acrylics–I didn’t thin the paint at all, and now I know that was a mistake…a layer of primer, a layer of tire black, a layer of Panzer Dunkelgrau…much too thick, I just don’t like the way it looks. Not looking forward to attempts to remove the paint and start over, I’ve ordered some ModelKasten replacements (call me crazy). How best does one thin the paint for a monochrome tank, to be painted in acrylics? I plan on priming all the major surfaces with stippled Mr Surfacer 500. What ratio of thinner to paint should I use? I have both a Paasche single action and double action, and an Aztek 4802 DA airbrush…generally I use ModelMaster acryl thinner.

hey man-- everybody has thier own system i guess-- mine is this–i use the recomended reducer (or chemical equivilent) and reduce the paint as much as possible to still get coverage-- practice first-- i use MM acrylic also – i usually start with about 60 per cent paint, but i adjust up or down depending on the effect, or if it is just the base color or whatever–u can always put more on but as u are learning it is MUCH HARDER to take it back off!![:(]-- to me the other part of acrylic paint reduction that is very important is humidity-- the paint has to stay wet for at least a short while and not dry ‘on impact’ so to speak[:P] good luck-- treadwell[:D]

Thank you for the advice…unfortunately, I discovered that “tire black”, a muted down, faded sort of black, is almost the exact shade as Panzer Dunkelgrau, so I had to mix some black with it to achieve some contrast.

I’m thinking about 60-70% thinner to paint mix to start with. I made the same mistake on a Fw190D-9 aircraft I just built, used unthinned paint, and regretted it.

I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to live with myself…
