OUT OF BOX 1974 Tamiya kit- Bought it for a few bucks at a sale at my local hobby store- I’m a bit dissapointed (though not surprised) that it had rubber tracks, as it did say on the box “Fully Detailed Plastic Tracks”. Anyways, I’ll build this one quick, as I just need to practice some painting techniques, and see how this whole think turns out. Friuls are too expensive, which is one reason I’m not gonna spend much time on this one. GOTTA GET STARTED!!!

Thanks… I’m also doing this to test out my new air compressor— A Silentaire super-silent 50… My very kind neighbor gave it to me… It’s a $1263 compressor… I had no idea compressors got that expensive. I think its the most expensive portable compressor available. AND IT IS ABSOLUTELY SILENT!

Finishing up construction about now. I’ll finish up the sanding and putty work tonight so I can get right on the painting first thing in the morning. I bought some Future and some MM Lusterless Flat, so, Bill, I’ll be trying out your method this time around…

There is a newer updated version of this kit with link-and-lengths and metal barrel. I believe it to have a few more additions also. Good luck on this old classic.
WOW! Only 50 parts or so for this Tamiya kit? Should be interesting to see how it comes out. How old is the kit if you can look at the year imprinted on the box unless it is a re-box of older kits?

It is a rebox. As said at the beginning of my first post, it’s the 1974 kit. But the detail appears to be pretty crisp in comparison to the average 1970’s Tamiya kits.
Also, I realise there’s a newer version of the kit, but I got this one because it was 50% off. It’s just for practice.
Finally done with practically all of the construction- just wanted to post a quick update… the next update will be tomorrow morning after I get some painting done I guess. I just have to damage the fenders a bit, and add the antenna- then I’ll be done for the night.

Edit: OK, now I’m all done with the construction… Painting this in a day will be fun!

Thanks Bill. I’ve just now finished the pre-shading, base coat, and post-shading. I think it turned out just a bit darker than I wanted, but its not bad. It looks like more of a German Afrika Korps color- most of the Italian tanks have a lighter sand base color. Oh well, it looks good even if its a bit darker than the real thing. The base coat is a mix of Tamiya flat white, desert yellow and isopropyl alcohol (91% alcohol) all mixed in about a 35:35:30 ratio- the 30% being the alcohol. The post-shade is about 50%desert yellow to 50% thinner.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I must go feast on the finest of all non-nutritive edible foams- Eggo waffles.

Sorry that the pictures are so bad… It really does look better in person. The color variation is quite good… I like this method. It worked quite well, other than the dull coat, which turned out pretty glossy, and I put it on THIN, so i don’t know what the problem was. Anyways, I’m happy with it as a 24-hour quick build.
I look forward to trying out this method again with some more drying time in between coats… it would look better that way, as the dullcoat might dry better like that…
