Does anyone know if PZ2s were still with in HQ units in the 10th when US forces were in Tunisia?
Yes they were. I have photos of a Panzer II F of the Regimental Staff of Panzer Regiment 7, 10th Panzer Division, knocked out at Kasserine, and some others as well.
Would you be able to post those pics?. If not describe the markings, paint, etc. I have an F/G kit from Tamiya that I’m hoping to dio either in the rear or knocked out.
This color plate is probably more useful than the photo, as you can’t see any markings other than the crosses.
Actually the hull in this plate has the older unit markings of the yellow inverted Y with hash marks that was not in use at the time of the Kasserine battle. These are located next to the cross by the antenna trough and rear corner on this plate. I think I know the photo you are referring to in your post here. BTW nice plate profile, where did you find it? Armor profiles like this seem to be much harder to find online[:(]
The plate came from page 102 of Wehrmacht Panzer Divisions 1939-45.
The photo is from page 313 of The 10th Panzer Division, by Jean Restayn.
You can just barely see the letter R on the back of the turret and what looks like the numbers 02 on the rear, just to the right of the cross.

I have other photos of 10th Pz Dv vehicles, supposedly taken at Kasserine which also show the yellow Y and 3 bars divisional symbol. Page 325 of 10th Panzer Division shows a photo of a SdKfz 251 taken after Kasserine, with the Y symbol clearly visible on the nose. The color plate section on page 342 of The 10th Panzer Division shows the changes in divisional symbols and lists the Y and bars as “until the end in Tunisia”.
For the $90 I paid for this book, I hope it is correct!
[oops]I stand corrected on 10th Panzer insignia[;)] I had a brain cramp and was confusing it with 15th Panzer for some unknown reason. There is a good photo published in two different Concord books (yes I do have many), “Panzers in North Africa”, and “US Tank Battles in North Africa” showing an abandoned Mk II F, minus guns and one track, in a large puddle in Tunisia. The vehicle is a darker overall color (poss the 2nd brown used in Africa) and has no discernable markings at all on the front or right side.

There were some new tactical number markings in the 7th Pz Rg of the 10th Pz Dv. at Kasserine, some Pz IVs in a well know photo show these. Maybe you were thinking of that too?
Keeping track of all this normally useless military minutia can be difficult, if not impossible sometimes…[:)]
USELESS? Never!!! You never know if you may end up on “Jeopardy!” Actually I was thinking of a 15th panzer Mk IV of that time/place with their markings in red on the back of the bustle stowage bin. Both divisional and regimental insignia.
