Putting out group build feelers "Unarmed and Unafraid"

Well, as to Combat Medic, those are infantry units embedded in combat forward forces. They’re the ones that stick folks back together during a fire fight. I think typically they have a .45 automatic for protection, though their primary function is to provide immediate medical assistance and triage during combat.

I was asking that as they are also the primary folks in a combat zone (since WWII, at least) to ensure that the wounded are taken back, put on medevac vehicles (jeeps, trucks, helicopters [Korea and on] and such).

Also I was asking as I think I’m going to attempt a Vietnam era Medevac “Hot” LZ during an engagement on the ground with a Huey Medevac Chopper. (Still idea spinning, not married to this idea just yet).

Another project to get my mental juices pumped.

Absolutely. I think that fits very well within the spirit of the Group Build.

The Huey itself would be unarmed as modeled, and its mission is medevac, not delivering weapons. Having a medic and armed troops in the scene doesn’t change that.

I’d say go for it. That could make a really interesting diorama! I’d be happy to have you in the group.

Did I read that fire fighter aircraft are allowed?

I’ve got this one in the stash

Landing craft are typically armed, at least with machine guns.
For ships you could consider supply vessels, which for the USN are now unarmed and mostly civilian manned, or harbor craft, or hospital ships, or chartered cargo ships.

Yes, I think firefighting aircraft fit.

I originally framed this mostly around military subjects, but I think military and public-service subjects is a better definition of what I’m trying to do here. That would include things like Coast Guard, firefighting, rescue, disaster response and similar subjects.

The basic rule stays the same: the subject itself needs to be unarmed as modeled, and its represented mission isn’t delivering weapons.

So yes, bring on the fire bomber! :slightly_smiling_face:

Good point on the landing craft. I was thinking more about the mission than the fact that many of them would have mounted weapons, which would obviously take them out under the “subject itself is unarmed” rule.

The supply vessels, harbor craft and hospital ships are great examples, though. That’s exactly the kind of less obvious subject I’m hoping this Group Build brings out.

Thanks for adding those!

The mention of the civilian-crewed vessels just made me think of another whole category I hadn’t considered — the civilian boats that helped evacuate the troops from Dunkirk.

Those “Little Ships” seem like a perfect fit for Unarmed & Unafraid. Civilian boats and crews putting themselves in harm’s way to help rescue thousands of troops, without being combat vessels themselves.

I think that’s helping me refine the definition a little more. I don’t necessarily want to limit this strictly to military-owned subjects. Firefighting, rescue, Coast Guard, civilian support vessels like the Little Ships of Dunkirk — they all fit the spirit of what I’m trying to do here.

This discussion is giving me even more ideas for the Group Build. :joy:

I am all in, I have a stearman, 2 command cars, 2 trucks, 2 flying demo teams, a bull dozer, a ww1 ambulance, and even a landing craft that fits. The hard part is deciding which one to do!

I just finished the Spirit of St louis and am doing a ww2 firetruck now.

For me it will be one of two:

  1. A Bell UH-1B Medevac Chopper
    or
  2. An M113 APC “Rescue” Unit (Medic, also, basically a Medevac, just on the ground).

If this GB is a go, I’d definitely be interested. Since you’ve opened it up to ships and such, there are tons of things to choose from so I’m not going to commit to a specific model at this time, but I’m in if you start it.

Sounds perfect, I’ll put you on the pending list.

For sure a go, going to post this weekend all the details.
