Just a freindly FYI/Headsup; the new Tom Hanks film Greyhound is out on AppleTV. He’s a rookie skipper of a Fletcher class destroyer commanding his first escort duty in the North Atlantic. The film is fast paced and fun, good ship porn, with a few Hollywood eye roll moments 
They filmed it on the USS Kidd.
I’m looking forward to it. The ship in the book was a Mahan, close enough.

Really ticks me off that I would have to get an Apple sub to see the movie. I don’t do anything Apple so I’ll have to wait till it comes out on other venues.
Yeah, I was hoping that they would delay the release until cinemas open up again. This is the type of movie to see on the big screen with all the latest cinema bells and whistles. I’m somewhat disappointed about this release choice.
Sad to say I think this is the future.
Theater reopenings are an uncertainty, at least for awhile.
AMC as an example is in debt restructure.
Ticket prices just keep going up and up.
The “stigma” of “straight to video” is being broken with this movie, “Hamilton”, “Da 5 Bloods” and others.

You can do a 7 day free trial with Apple+. Aftter that its $5 a month. I signed up and watched yesterday. What a great film! Now to cancel or review their content…

I, too, want antoehr venue.
I have been burned, one too many times, by “it’s free now, just $$$ later, and cancel at anyy time.” To find the cancelation is buried in some help file under an unrealted topic, or there are all sorts of conditions involved, and the like.
And while the promos do show that they did a decent job on uniforms, I’m loath to see what else did not get that level of attention.
The fact that I was recently robbed of time I could have used cleaning sewer watching the Midway remake may be a sticking point here, too.
The dress generally correctly on doctor shows too–but ask a doctor how realistic they are.
Using a Fletcher for a Mahan is a bit like using using a Churchill Mk VII as a French Char B1. Speed, both flank and cruise very different, truning radii different–after gun mounts were open with no houses, torpedo tubes all different, and not a single K gun.
Suspension of disbelief wants plausibile belief. Battle of the Bulge withe Hellcats versus Pattons, was silly, visually, but they tried to depict those portions of the battles as weer within cinematrography.
I’m sore afraid this thing was written by a screenwriter who “knew a guy” who played Wolrd of Warships and based this story on that knowledge.
Frankly, some of the bashing is getting a little tiresome. And exactly where, for example, where they going to get a Mahan class destroyer to film on? They were lost in the war, or expended as targets, or scrapped outright immediately after the war.
FYI, the film was mostly shot on the USS Kidd DD-661 for a very simple reason - it is the only surviving WW2 destroyer in more or less its wartime configuration. All of the other survivors were modified to a significant degree before their retirement.
The movie you want to see would bore 99% of the audience to tears in minutes. This is no great film to any degree, but some of the decisions made were, in fact, for very good reasons.
Yesterday I found out from the wife that we still had our Apple TV subscription active from when we cut cable at our last home. So after dark, it was movietime featuring Greyhound. All in all a pretty enjoyable war at sea movie. Not being a sailor or overly well read on early WWII ASW stuff, I can’t vouch for accuracies and inaccuracies, but overall I thought that it was really well done and I completely enjoyed the movie. I will add it to my library when it’s released for sale on Blu Ray.
I still would have preferred to watch it in a cinema, but given the current state of things… wish in one hand and [cnsod] in the other, right?
I don’t understand the complaints about the ship “not being a Mahan Class”. It is not a documentary - it is a movie based on/inspired by a work of fiction.
I watched the film with my wife last weekend. I thought it was well done, and she got caught up in the tension and was far from bored. As a former CIC Officer, I thought it was pretty accurate in terms of procedures and dialog. And it certainly reminded me of the North Atlantic in winter!
I, too, would rather have seen it in a theatre, but I’m glad they released it now…
