Proposed GB: Self-Propelled Artillery, Have Gun, Will Travel

Hi all,

Following the success of my Achtraden 8x8 GB which finished at the end of May, I would like to propose a new armor build on the theme of SPGs, Self Propelled Guns.

Self-Propelled Artillery: “Have Gun, Will Travel”

The range of possibilities is enormous and I don’t recall this class of armor having been gievn the GB treatment at any time in the last few years.

Proposed rules:

Tracked or wheeled artillery (anything other than towed artillery) from all nations and all time periods, from the invention of armor to the present day. All manufactiurers, kits and scales, OOB and AM, crossovers and pre-started kits are fine, dioramas very welcome but by no means obligatory.

A quick roundup of appropriate subject matter, from memory:

  • US: M40, M57, M107, M108, M109, M110 etc.
  • Germany: Humel, Sturer Emil, Tiger Geschutzwagen, Panzerhaubitzer 2000, etc.
  • England: AS-90/Braveheart, etc.
  • Russia: PT-76, M-1974, 2S6 etc.
  • China: Type 83 SPH

As you can see, there’s plenty to choose from and something for every taste, from the WWII afficionado to the fan of rarer modern armor, with plenty of opportunities for colorful camo and adventures in weathering.

Proposed timeframe: July 1st - December 31st, 2010.

The objective is fun! For myself I fancy finishing an Italeri M110 that’s been a shelf queen for way too long, then maybe break sprue on something by Dragon or Trumpeter.

If this sounds like the build for you, just let me know and if we have a decent body of interest I’ll launch a proper thread on the GB forum on July 1st. Sorry it’s short notice – real life has been doing its thing!

Cheers, Mike/Thunderbolt379

Mike,

It sounds like a great idea! I might even want in on some of that action.

However, the soviet / russian PT-76 is an amphibious tank and not really self propelled artillery. Not to nit-pick though.

Also what about multiple rocket launchers (i.e. the soviet BM-21, US MLRS or the chinese Type 89 MRL)?

The closest I’ve seen was the StuG GB with the Sturmtiger and Sturmpanzer admitted as well.

I thought about starting a GB myself, but decided to push it off until Aug. or Sept, because of some kits that I want to finish first, and the “summer” factor to die down as well.

There certainly are some possibilities on this. Good luck.

Yeah me too. I’ve got to much on my plate right now to start a new project but I can see one in my future this year.[:D]

Mike - I don’t do GBs but if you need someone to “make a call” or lookin from the artillery side, I would be more than happy to help. I am just a lanyard pull away!!

Rounds Complete!!

MLRS/MLR and tube SPs in the same catagory? Speaking as a formerTube Artilley chief (M109A3)… Phooey to rockets… Rocket guys are so far in the rear they can run over Generals…

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies, we have a variety of impressions but the one coming through is that this may be the wrong time to launch the build, too many folks have too much on, what with the northern summer and prior bench committments. That’s okay, it can be launched at a later time if it would make it possible for more builders to be involved.

RESlusher – the PT-76 I was thinking of was not the amphibious light tank of 1950s origin, but the WWII vehicle that carried the same designation (UM produce a braile-scale kit). It was a turretted light artillery piece on the chassis of something like the T-60 or T-70, I’m not exactly sure which, but it was sure a small SPG.

One vote for rockets, one against – admittedly I was thinking tube specifically.

Any other thoughts?

Cheers, Mike/TB379

AHHH! I was going to mention that I am very interested but I am already committed to two upcoming GBs … Norway WW2 (if it is still on) and 60th Anniversary Korea War. I will probably build either M7 Priest or Hummel. Maybe we can make it into winter GB like we did for our 8X8 GB… just let us know when timing is right.

I do have another M109 kit in the stash and probably will sign on if it’s run at a later date… I’ve got too many irons in the fire right now…

DP and HVH – sounds like we’re getting a concensus that it’s a good build but the time is not right. Okay, how about December 1st - May31st? I would have said November but at this point it looks like I’ll be spending some time overseas and won’t be home till the third week of November.

I confess I wouldn’t mind building something for the Korea GB too, I promised at the time of the last one to fish out that AFV Club Walker Bulldog…

Cheers, Mike/TB379

I’d definately sign on if you run it then…

FA- The Grunt’s 911…

Definitely looking more like an end-of-year start!

Redleg, I’d be delighted to have the benefit of an artillery expert as an advisor around a build like this – observations, questions, there’s nothing like having an expert! (I found this out with an F-4 factory expert on Rhinomania 1 – invaluable!)

Cheers, Mike/TB379

PANZERJAGER, REPORTING FOR DUTY SIR!!!

Not sure what subject yet, but would be German and most likely odd!

will have to go spelunking in the mega stash…

I’m certainly not opposed to just limiting the build to tube arty. I’m sure I can find a worthy submission that won’t shame you cannon-cockers too much!! [:D[

I just fell in love with the MLRS while parked near some of them doing a night fire during ODS. Ahhhhhh, to be young again!! There’s nothing like smiting an entire grid square with God’s own righteous fury!

What the Heck?! Count me in. Just give me a start date!

^^Ditto!!^^

Hmmmmmm…I am interested. I have 2 other GB commitments so depending on the start date I could do it. I have been bitten by the armor bug, and I was looking at the M40. So the timing can be good. If I do join I will probably build an M40 by AFV Club. I only have like 2.4 armor kits under my belt so I think it would be a good learning experience.

Well, now it’s starting to look more like a GB!

Panzerjager, RESlusher and macattack80 are in, plus Heavy Arty as tech advisor – yo, Gino, great to cross paths again, buddy, it’s been years! We have a ‘Corps of Military Advisors’ now!

I’d like to time it for the maximum number of participants, so if you guys are okay with a later start date, I have no problem delaying a few months to let those with committments free up some bench space.

I foresee us laying down a hefty barrage in due course!

Cheers, Mike/TB379

If this ones going to kick off in DEC, I’d like to jump on. I’ve got a 109A6 in the stash that I’ve been lookin’ for a reason to build. I like the later start date too. Seems like everyone else … I’ve got too much going on at the moment. Got a couple that I’d like to finish up before the year is out.

I am in my first group build now,I want to see how it goes before committing to another (Though it seems like fun to participate in these!). Count me as an interested possible.

I’d certainly like to wait, since, believe it or not, I STILL have never built a diorama of MY gun, Bravo-13 “Dirty White Boys”… I’ve built all three of my towed pieces (M101, M102, & M114), but for some reason, never got to the M109…
