Promodeler 1/48 F-84G Thunderjet " Lil Butch "

Here is the latest addition to my slowly growing collection of Korean era Warbirds. This one is the Promodeler F-84G, built pretty much OOB. A very nicely detailed kit and a straight forward build. Only problem I had was with the nose wheel gear strut, which was slightly warped & required some careful tweaking to get an acceptable appearance.

Model was painted with Alclad2 for the NMF & ModelMaster enamels for the details. Decals from Aeromaster. I knew these decals were sized for the Tamiya kit, but was still surprized at the amount of trimming reqired to fit the Promodeler kit. There would appear to be some significant dimensional differences between the two kits. Wonder which one is more accurate ?

Comments & questions welcome. Hope you enjoy it.

Regards, Rick

yeah I gotta question… have ya started it up and taxi’d around the block yet??? Looks beautiful as usual from you. great finish on that especially the O.D. near the windscreen area. Great stuff.

Beautiful job there Rick!

I’m not really fond of 50’s jets but your Thunderjet looks so neat! [tup] The way it sits is just lovely. I liked the dropped flaps a lot, do they come as sepparate parts in the kit or did you cut them off the wing?

Thanks Jeff & Jorch, appreciate your comments. The dropped flaps come that way in the kit.

Regards, Rick

Did you mask the Alclad and paint the OD or vise versa? Good job!

Richard,

A very clean bird, I’ve got my eye on this kit for a future project. Did this kit come with the optional “blown” canopy?

Steve

Beautiful job there Rick…
I think you have a great representation of a 50’s jet - “The Golden age of Jets”

I am always amazed at the dimensional difference between metric and imperical scales.
Thing to check is if there are major differences between Tam and Hase (both metric)

Your beautiful 84 is what I wanted mine to be, though it wasn’t. Especially the finish. Your bare metal work is outstanding. I wanted that very scheme when I built my ProModeler F-84G, but couldn’t find it, so I went OOB, which was a bit of a mistake. The scheme is nice, it’s colorful, but I wasn’t happy with the register or the colors, which were not accurate, especially the blue, which was too dark. The stenciling was excellent, but on the F-84 it’s EVERYWHERE and gets quite tedious. Now I want to build the Tamiya version of the “Lieutenant Killer” since, as I described the other day, the painters came in my apartment, and, as I was explaining to the painter how important it was to stay clear of my models, he slammed his fist straight down on my F-84, smashing it flat, saying, “We’ll be real careful.” Then, seeing what he’d done, he just shrugged his shoulders and muttered something in Arabic. I wanted to kill him so bad I was almost hyperventilating.
Oh, and that really nice photoetched ladder that comes with the PM kit? I made a dreadful mess of mine, twisting and distorting the brass parts, so it wasn’t useable, but if done right, it’s one of the better boarding ladders I’ve seen in any kit.

Is the pro modeller a reboxed Hasagawa? Very nice build.

Rick very nicely done I really like the baremetal finish

Thanks everyone for your comments. Much appreciated.

Wayne, I did the Alclad2 first, then masked & sprayed the OD. That’s one of the reasons I like Alclad2, you can mask it without destroying the NMF.

Steve, the kit includes an optional canopy.

Tom, the boarding ladder is now somewhere in my spares box. Probably never to be found again.

f-4phantom, no, the kit is original tooling for Revell/Monogram/Promodeler. Hasegawa doesn’t make a 1/48 F-84. You may be thinking of Tamiya.

Regards, Rick

Wow very nice looking build up there! I may have to give ProModelers a second look, the only one I ever bought was a P-40 from when they first started the line and well to say the least it was horrid! The best thing about the kit was the direction sheet…the rest of the kit got sent to the spare’s pile halfway through the build…

What more can I say that hasn’t already been said. The finish on that is just superb! Looks ready for take off!

A great finish on the old bird, thanks for the pics.

That looks awesome,

I really like the NMF, it turned out very nicely. What did you use for primer with the Alclad? I’m about to have a go at it for the first time, and I’d like it to turn out half as nice as yours. Thanks for the pics.

Nice job, Rick ! The red, white, and O.D. make for a very attractive scheme.
Well done !

Very neat model, Rick…

“Lil Butch” is outstanding, Mr. Kinsey
