Project #4: Tamiya German King Tiger 1/35th Ardennes Front

I have finally begun work on this kit today. I don’t have hardly any of the paint I need so all I have done so far is everything black, white and skin tone. I should be getting some paints in the mail in a few days so I can really hit this thing hard. I already have many of my questions on the paint job for it answered from another thread but I’m sure I’ll have more questions on it later on.

Btw, if anyone is looking for a good deal on Model Master acrylic paint, http://galactic-voyager.com/ is selling 1/2 oz. bottles for just $1.29 each. The sale goes through next Monday, the 15th.

Edit: That must have been a closeout sale. They don’t even sell paint anymore. I wish I had bought a few more bottles. lol

That is a great kit. Hope to see some progress shots of it soon.

I am working on the same kit as we speak (for the Bulge Build) Thanks for the lead on paints.

JWest: Now that I’m working on this kit maybe I will join your GB if it’s still going. If so could you please post the link here?

How soon I have pics depends on when I get my paint in the mail. Hopefully I’ll be able to post something on it before too long.

I will add you to the list

Sounds cool. That is a great price on the paint by the way.

Nice find on the paint, that’s a pretty good deal considering they usually go for twice that.

Sounds like a good project, joining it in with the GB will no doubt enhance your efforts. [;)]

Thanks JWest. I only hope it comes out as good as I want it to.

I saved about $5 bucks ever after shipping over what Hobby Lobby would have cost buying a few bottles from that site. I sure am glad I did a search for model master and found it.

Edit: forgot to mention, pay with paypal and you get a $1 discount taken off your bill.

I finally got some of my paints in the mail today and got a little extra painting on the small stuff done. I might get the base coat on the rest airbrushed on tomorrow if I have time.

If anyone has any tips on doing the camo pattern on the upper hull I’m open to suggestions.

Only suggestion I’d offer is to lay down the basecoat as Dark Yellow first and then apply the Olivgrun and Rotbraun in their respective patterns. This not only mimics the way the paint was actually applied, it also gives you greater flexibility in determining the final shape of the scheme and redoing/repairing any mishaps along the way.

I’ll probably be using some slightly different paints because I don’t have either of those 3. Thanks for the tips on the camo pattern. I just hope it turns out fairly decent.

I got a good bit of progress made yesterday attaching the road wheels and doing the back part with the exhaust and stuff. Will try to post some in-progress pics later today.

Do you guys camo the wheels too or leave them the base coat color, or does it really matter?

I had some pics taken of not much done but just decided to go ahead and camo the thing when the rest of my paints came in the mail. Decided to camo the wheels too and it worked out pretty good. Here are the results of my very first camo job.

Hi Molina, looks as though you’re on your way. You did good for your first camo job, To me German cammo is both fun and hair-pulling. A lot of ad-libbing, especially in areas that you can’t see in drawings. My suggestion is to continue the camo down below the glacius plate in the front. At that stage of the war, most of the King Tigers were pretty covered in cammo. It looks as though you might have missed some base color along the drive sprockets, but it might be the lighting in the picture. Also your jack and tow hooks look too shiney. I’d repaint them flat black and then drybrush with steel or metallic grey. Good luck on the rest of your King.

With the sprockets, it’s probably the lighting. I’m pretty sure I didn’t miss anything there.

As for the other stuff, I didn’t have metallic gray until yesterday when I got anthracite gray metallic in the mail but really didn’t like that much so I used aluminum.

I finished it up yesterday but I think I will go back and paint the lower front panel. I forgot to do that yesterday.

I just realized I forgot all the spots on the camo pattern. I guess I’m not as finished as I thought. lol.

Well, I’m back. I disappeared for a little while but I’m back now. I finished up my Tiger a while back but I think I’ll go back and make a couple of paint changes then I’ll try to post pics of it later on.

I also got a couple more kits off ebay. Tamiya 1/35th Anti-tank gun and I think it was a Type 97 Japanese tank. I finished the AA gun yesterday and started the tank last night.

You’re a busy beaver Molina. Good luck.

Your sure right about that. I’ve got college finals coming up in a couple weeks and just trying to keep on top of things.
