Progress Update - F.M. PV-1 Ventura

Well, I FINALLY got all the seams filled and paint applied - I was trying for a “faded” look, but I’m not sure if I like it or not…[%-)] what is the general concensus - realistic or ridiculous? Some of the lightness is actually caused by the flash, especially the side views. One time I look, it seems OK, the next…your opinions are valued!

Thanks for you comments and constructive criticism!

Like the looks of the plane so far!, but the fading looks a little uneven “in the picture anyhow” and not sure you will be happy in the end if your having question about it now!

Hope that is of some help…

If you can get it outside to take a picture in the natural light, that would be good for everyone! I think it looks neat, a little teal, but I don’t know from PV-1s anyhow!

Brian:

I am far from an expert at painting and weathering, but it looks like the paint was thinned too much, making for a gloss finish, and uneven. To be conservative I am starting with paints thinned according to what the maker says, with Tamiya paints I try to stay no more that 1 part thinner and 4 parts paint, but with enamels I go as much as 1:1, depending on how new the bottle of paint is. I try to get an even first coat, looking like an airplane just out of the paint shop. To lighten it up (like a sun bleached paint might look) I am practicing with overcoats after decalling that are a little bit of white or light grey mixed in clear. Like I say, I am still practicing, maybe one of the experts here can “enlighten” those like me that still wander in the weathering wilderness.

Thank you all for the input, it helps!

SteveK1953, the fading looks more intense in the picture than it is, and it picked up a lot of reflected color from the cutting mat below it. I will try to get some natural light pics tomorrow (if it don’t rain again), to get a better representation for all. Looks like we are neighbors (kind of) - I live just outside Camas, WA.

RadMax8, the color looks way too bright in these photos, I am gonna try your suggestion and get some natural light pics tomorrow, hopefully that will give a truer color (which is actually non-spec sea blue). [4:-)]

jeaton, I forgot to mention that it also has a sealer coat of Future on it, in case I decide to go to decals from here. I thinned the paint on a 3:1 ratio, and it was actually TOO dull before the Future coat, dead flat, actually. Much of the glare will go away in natural light, I think (we’ll see, anyhow) [:-^]

Again, thank you all for the comments and suggestions, with your help, I might actually pull off something half way decent with this dog of a kit!

Brian,

A couple of shots of some faded sea blue I took at the Pima Museum. Maybe they can give you a direction to go.

Wayne,

Thanks a bunch - these pics not only help with the faded colors, they help with two additional kits I have inn the stash! Really appreciate it!
