Greetings. I’ve tried my Polly Scale flat finish for the first time, and I’ve got the following problem: it dries as “whitish opacue finish” instead of clean flat finish. Here’s the example:
As you see, it looks like a lot of white “dust”. My thumbs on the larger boat show the color that SHOULD be there, and black parts should be completely black. I’ve tried both airbrush it and brush it, with the same result, only brushed finish gives even more “dust”. I’m adding a bit of distilled water to finish.
Gloss finish from polly scale, which I’ve bought at the same time, works perfectly.
Can anyone said what’s the problem and how to solve it, or should I just throw the bottle away and buy something else? The problem is, there is no matt finish in our one and only hobby shop, and I kind of don’t want to buy one tiny bottle from abroad, shipment would be five time price of the bottle…
What you’re getting looks like a combination of dusting and flocculation—a $10 word (convert to pounds on your own…[(-D]) for microscopic clumping.
You need to do two things:
Dilute the paint a lot more—nearly 50 percent—to the consistency of 2 percent milk.
Strain the paint through a fine mesh screen to remove the clumps. If you have an electric stirrer, that may help, but you still need to strain it after stirring.
It works best sprayed in light coats at a higher pressure, say 15 to 20 psi.
You didn’t mention how old the paint was. Clear flats have a shorter shelf life than anything except metallics.
I just used the pollyScale flat on my Bismarck hull and I diluted 1:1 with distilled water and it worked great. I sprayed it on just as Triarius said, thin coats at about 20 psi.
