Priming with future - o.k. under alclad, metalizers, etc.?

(Apologies to anyone reading ARC’s forums as this is posted there too…)

I was spraying some future tonight, sealing some painted parts, and had to prime the burner can on my viper. Instead of blowing out the remaining future, and putting in some Mr. Surfacer 1000 or 1200 like I normally use, I said “hey, I think people might sometimes use future as a primer” and I shot what was left as a primer. I wanted to check, however, and make sure that the Alclad and metalizer that I’m going to lay down will stick to the future, and won’t also obliterate and melt it in the process.

Does it work very well as a primer in all scenarios?

Thanks all - Jon

Dunno about Alclad, but Future seems to actually work even better than Mr. Surfacer for Testors Metallizer.

Future is all I use for Alclad… their lacquer primer just never seems to dry/cure for me… several coats to a brilliant gloss shine then the alclad goes on… that’s it!

That’s interesting. I’ve never used the Alclad stuff so pardon the naive question, but what you’re saying is that you can use future as a base coat and spray that Alclad or other metal paints over it? How exactly do metal paints work? I’ve read other posts where they say metal paints show all the inperfections and such. Would the base spray of Future combat this? Thanks

I always use Future as a primer before I spray any metal based paint. The secret is several light coats of future. Just mist it on, let dry and do several mist coats again. It will fill in very small inperfections bur not deep scratches. It does make buffing metal paints lay down better.
