What’s the best primer on the market? I want something that is hopefully water based and has low odour (very important). I’ve used both tamiya and testors but they both literally make me sick to the stomach (even though I spray them in the garage with the door wide open and wear a mask). Other model paint doesn’t have this effect.
Also, does it make a difference whether it comes from a spray can or is airbrushed? I’ve had limited success with a spray can.

an airbrush is much better as it allows you to control the paint flow. When you say mask, you mean mask and not respirator right? if so that would be your problem. respirators have special filters for organic vapors and such like, and with the setup you described with one of those you will not be able to smell a thing. literally. the best primer might be krylon gloss back. it’s good for NMF anyhow. not sure about for other stuff.
Krylon primer? That’s a rust paint right? How is the coverage and drying time?

I’ve taken a liking to “Color Place” Machinery Grey primer. I really like how it performs over resin.

krylon… you’re in the USA right? It’s a lacquer based paint that comes in rattle cans. it’s meant for outdoor use. if you decant it into your airbrush it’s a good primer. it is toxic though. You should invest in a good respirator, and if you’re sensitive a spray booth as well.
Thanks for the advice everyone. Here’s what I tried: Testors model master acryl grey primer sprayed with the airbrush. Thinned it 3:1. Low odour, good coverage and cheap.
Until now I’ve used either Tamiya or TEstors enamel primer from a spray can (mostly because it’s a time saver). Never thought about how beneficial the airbrush is over the spray can! The spray can provides a much wider spray (so a lot more paint becomes airborne).
