Primer question on P-39....

I am painting a P-39 with OD on top and neutral gray below…and was wondering what color typically the primer was under the paint job? I am building a hand-me-down version so it’s going to be a bit beat up, so wanted to show some wear on the paint job…

Yup… I’m stumped too LOL…

I would think that no primer would be used on aircraft aluminium( weight?). Corrosion protection was from the inside (Zinc chromate). Service aircraft depicted with wear usually show the aluminum finish under the camo paint. Spraying the model with aluminum basecoat using the “salt” technique, applying finish coat of OD and removing salt crystals is really the most realistic way to depict that worn look. Don’t forget to apply the same technique to prop blades and of course, leading edges.

Hope this helps
