I’m just checking what colour primer people use:
Does it vary by model type or contemplated finish colours?
I’m asking because I’m building a Dodge Viper and I primed it black. I’m finding that I’m having trouble seeing where I’ve painted black over the primer.
I use black on armored stuff…almost like a preshade, but when I am doing A/C I usually use white since most final coats I use are light in color. For a black finish I suppose I would use a gray.

It just came to me…if you have primed it in black and your finished color is black, why not just buff it a little and shoot a clear gloss on your primer?
Your obviously not in the Army. Clear thinking like that would get you now where.

Depends. Darker topcoats get black or gray. Lighter topcoats get wihite or gray. Sometimes I use silver if I want to show paint chipping. I have obtained real good results using decanted Krylon primers. I also read somewhere that Floquil Engine Black makes a great primer.
If your Viper’s topcoat is black, I would have used gray primer polished smooth to get rid of any small bumps and then shot the black over that followed by a clear gloss coat to give it a wet look.
So my next question is: can you use an acrylic paint, applied with an airbrush as a primer. I’ve heard of “misting” the paint on lightly for better adhesion so I was wondering about building up with multiple acrylic “mists.”
I’m just wondering about a priming method other than rattle-cans outside in sub-freezing temperatures.
I wouldn’t bother priming at all for a black base coat.
Has anyone tried Vallejo’s primer? I found they have a black, white and a grey primer for airbrushing.I bought a bottle to try out.
