Hey fellow Modelers,
I haven’t been around this forum that long, so forgive me if this has been discussed before, but I have stumbled on a new (for me anyway) material for masking, Glad Press n Seal. I used it to mask off my 1/48 Revell B-17 and it worked great. It sticks down very well, can be cut to any size or shape, and doesn’t lift off any paint. So, you might want to give it a try.

Is this some type of frisket film? I’ve been looking for a good thing frisket, but so far all I can find these days is thick, mylar type stuff.
It has been discussed before, but thanks for the reminder.

Sharkskin: what is frisket material? Haven’t heard that term before. Glad Press n Seal is paper-like stuff that comes on a roll like wax paper or foil or plastic wrap, but it’s very sticky on one side and it adheres to dry surfaces very well, but with no residue at all.

Sounds like you’ve got some type of frisket. It’s a clear or semi-opaque plastic or paper that comes in a roll, usually with a peel-off backing. It’s used primarily by airbrush artists in commercial art. But for modeling, where you have to cut around a lot of protrusions and compound curves, the thinnest plastic or paper frisket is best. Frisket film, by its nature, is low tack, because even using it to make paintings on paper or cardboard, you don’t want it to pull up the last color you painted, or rip the paper. Larger art supply stores will have a good selection (smaller stores will have it, but the choice is limited) of the different types of film. The best paper frisket, I’ve found, comes in large sheets, not rolls, and is less than a dollar a sheet. I’ve never noticed brand names on the stuff, although I’m sure they have them, obviously.
It’s not frisket paper !!! It’s made by Glad, you buy it in the supermarket right next to the Aluminum foil, waxed paper, and Saran wrap !!
Arrgghh! Forgive my thickheadedness (though you should watch your !!! blood pressure Wayne), I know exactly what my man is referring to, just slipped my mind. When thinking of models, I don’t usually think supermarket, though I should what with the popularity of floor wax these days. At least now you know the answer to What is frisket film, and I still don’t know if Press n Seal will work as masking material. I do know that in modeling, only a fool limits himself to what’s found at a hobby shop or art supply. I do more actualy masking, or creating soft color demarcations, using common Post-It notes (generic ones) than any other kind of tape or frisket.
Glad Press n’ Seal–hmmm, I’ll have to look for some next time I do the grocery shopping. Sounds like a good product.[:)]
ok my turn. a horror story times two. bought press and seal and used it to mast three canopies. made sure i had it down tight, sprayed the plane with primer, sprayed the coats of paint, unmasked the a/c, horror, massive paint bleeding under the “mask”.
be careful it may work for you but then again…

Thanks for the heads up Joe. I haven’t used it for canopies. so I’ll definitely be careful. It worked good when I was spraying the upper body olive drab.
I bought a roll on this past Saturday in hopes that my masking problems would be over. Sadly this stuff didn’t stick to anything (except my fingers). Do you need to do anything special to it to get it to stick to painted surfaces?

i used the round end of the knife to get it to stick. i did get a reasonable mask for the paint line. but then again it wasnt a hard line either.

My wife just bought some- I’m looking for masking that I can leave on my canopies for longer periods of time- any suggestions?
Modeltosser: sorry it didn’t work for you. I put it on my painted B-17 and it stuck just fine. Dumb question: are you sure you’re using the sticky side? One side…the under side…is a great deal stickier than the outerside.

Sorry, my fault all along, I wasn’t rubbing it down hard enough. I tried it again last night on my Airfix Kingfisher and it worked great! Sticks really well. Excellent stuff
