Hey everyone here is a silly question for you. The couple of times I have tried to preshade, the effect completely dissappears. Am I putting the paint on too thick or to many coats any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks.
Either one could be the culprit. Make sure your primer coat is very light (White or Light gray) and paint your lines black. Then, just mist the paint onto the model. When the lines are barely noticable, you’re done!!
After your done preshading Fill in the large panel areas that are not shaded. Next use light coats over the preshaded areas untill you get the desired effect you want. Your not just painting over the preshaded areas, you are actually trying to blend it into the top color. This takes some practice to get this skill down. But you can control how far away from the panel line the effect goes by painting from the center of the panel out to the lines. To control the drakness of the line by dusting directly over it lightly. That’s the best way I can explain it.
[#ditto] He nailed it…

What type of aircraft are you preshading? WWII and up have fewer steps involved than WWI subjects. For WWI, you need to start with a light-colored base coat, apply thin tape masks over each wing/tail rib (only as wide and long as the rib itself), paint your black/dark brown over each rib, remove the masks, and then proceed with the blending and painting as phoenix suggested. It’s time consuming but effective.
I have a friend who says that he sprays the basecoat color first, then the pre-shade lines, then goes back over with the base color to blend the pre-shade. This way the blending coat of the base color is simply that- blending- as he’s already put down a coverage coat.
I post-shade myself… find it a bit easier. [;)] Chalk works good too. Gets the same effect, and is very easy.
Thanks guys. John I like that idea I think I will try it. I will check back on this post on Tuesday. Thanks for all who chimed in. To answer what I build mostly modern US Navy Jets. In fact I am off to go home and start two of them for the Tomcat group build. Thanks again.
