Pre WWII RAF Colors

I am in the process of getting everything together for my ragwing Hurricane MKI kit together and am having trouble getting the correct colors pinned down. I am building L1568 of the No 73 squadron from 1938 with the Watts fixed pitch propeller in the “B” scheme, for a little background. (pg 47, top photo, as well as pg72 top, in the squadron Hurricane Walk Around)

I use acrylics exclusively and try to stay with Gunze Aqueous with Tamiya used as the usual substitute.

The dark earth and green are no problem…

According to Iliad Design’s marking guide it says that the lower sides were painted “Aluminum,” which I assume to be a flat, dope like, finish. Does this sound right and does anyone have a suggestion for this color?

I am also having trouble pegging an accurate Interior Green in Acrylic. Daywalker did suggest this, and I plan on going with this unless I hear anything better. Thanks Daywalker! [forgot to mention/ask, has anyone used Tamiya’s XF-71 Interior Green, or know how close it is to the RAF’s interior green?]

Thanks in advance!!

For the lower surfaces, any Silver or Aluminum with a slightly dull appearance should do. I use mostly enamels & “Floquil Old Silver” is a pretty good match. Not sure what to suggest in acrylic. For the interior, Tamiya XF-71 is a Japanese Navy Interior color & not that close to the British color. The best match I’ve found is ModelMaster RAF Gray Green which is available in enamel, but I think it’s also in their Acryl acrylic line up as well.

Regards, Rick

Tamiya make a good dull aluminum XF16. It has to be thinned alot if you want to airbrush it.

Just the kind of advice I was looking for! Thanks Guys.
