I’am working on a corsair F4-U the color the one I’am going to use is a sea blue. The question is what color do I use for the panel lines. I’am thinking black can that be black paint or should it be a wash of some sorts. thanks.
For a dark color like sea blue I’d skip the preshading. By the time you get a good coat of paint on the shading will be useless. I’d recomend post shading.
Take what I say with a grain of salt though. I’m not a big fan of preshading because while it adds interest to the paint, I don’t think it looks right. I tried it a couple of times found it hard to control the end result. I much prefer the control of post shading. To each their own.
BTW, to your original question, I’d recomend black paint for preshading. No washes or anything that follows the lines. The result is to stark and will be hard to hide if you don’t like it. The airbrushed soft edges of teh black paint blends into the paint better and dont’ look to stark or bold, but gentle.
I agree with you that it doesnt look right. When I see pictures of how they spray the panel lines with thick lines of dark color it looks like they ruined the model. Just my opinion though.

Okay, I’ll add to what others are saying. I am not a big fan of pre-shading anyway, but when I do use it it is only for lighter colors, not the dark stuff.
I was thinking the same thing with the color being that dark it would not look good. And besides that I have not done any preshading before. So I’ll need to practice a little. thanks.
