I just wanted some of the member’s opinions about whether it is better to pre shade panels with black and then put thin coats of color over them and then follow up with drybrushing, or use a wash and then drybrushing? Of course everyone has thier own preferred way, but maybe in the sharing there might be something new to pick up. It seems like the europeans may prefer the pre shading method, and I only say that from reading the Squadron modeling encyclopdia and the Tamiya magazine - they seem to be proponents of that method.

I use both techniques on the same model. But only on armor.
I do both. You can’t say that one technique is “better” or “preferred” because they really give your model two different effects.
There are various methods to “pre-shading” and “washing” but, that would be whole different debate. [:)]
Ditto. pre-shading darkens the area around the panel lines while washing accents the lines themselves (sometimes the area around as well depending on how you do it)

i use the preshading, postshading, and wash sometimes. there all great techniques if you have patience. i love postshading as it gives me so much control. if im doing bare metal finishes, i like the wash. if its a dark color on top and a light color on the bottom (i do aircraft exclusively so far) i use pre and post shading. later.
