I’m eyeballing the Polar Lights Star Trek TOS models as I have always wanted to build TOS ships and remember doing a few of the small kits 3 ship sets with the Enterprise, Klingon Battle Cruiser, and Romulan Bird of Prey (AMT I think?)in the 1970s.
Any builders here have a few good detail shots of the PL kits assembled? What with all the gearing back toward model building, I have a hankering to do some of these as well, with variations of them in recreated scenes and/or “artistic license” (battle damaged Constellation, etc.). May even get into kitbashing to create some of the ships as portrayed in the old Federation Technical Manual.
Also, anyone know anything about Polar Lights possibly bringing out a TOS Romulan Bird of Prey? I found another manufacturer, but the price compared to the Polar Lights is a bit high.
Romulan D-7 Storm Bird
The Storm Bird comes in variable color schemes.
Not familiar with the background in that, as all I ever
saw was the reddish orange one from the old series.
Romulan D-7 (TAS)
Not familiar with this marking scheme, or what “TAS” refers to.
Pretty cool stuff.
Hey, anyone wanna do a Star Trek 1/1000 TOS Group Build?
Both the 1701 and the D7 kits are money well spent. With the 1701 there are countless build up and kitbash options. The D7 kit is a little fussy with the fit but a very nice addition to the fleet and it comes with markings for Romulan as well.
Don’t be too hopefull of any all new Trek kits from Polor Lights. RC2 Xed most of the stuff PL had in the works.
The Resin Romulan BOP is the only one available in 1:1000 scale. There is a nice conversion kit available from X-Factor Productions to build up the Dooms Day Conni.
Aside from the AMT re-releases of Trek kits the only other sources for new stuff will be from the resin garage kit guys untill the plastic guys decide theres money in it again…[:(!]
But justfying $40 for the item, when the Enterprise and Klingon kits by PL are $10 or so, takes a bit of thinking. Especially since this particular model only consists of a few pieces compared to the many more in the PL kits:
Yes thats the resin kit. It looks to be a really good kit as far as detail goes. The higher price is due to it being resin. Resin kits are about 3 to 4 times the price of an injected plastic kit because of the cost of RTV molds, resin, and all the hands on work required in casting them. The 1701 and D7 and most other injection kits are mass produced resulting in an even lower price while resin kits are produced in batches of 20 or 50 kits at a time. Some folks even go so far as to cast only on demand.
TAS may be refering to the Tal Shiar. They maintain a seperate flee the regular military or do during the Dominion War era of the 2370’s. I guess they would earlier as well.
Actually, my thanks to Rob Gronovius who dropped me a note about the TAS reference. It refers to the little lost gems (some may argue that point) of “Star Trek: The Animated Series.”
I do remember the Romulan ships with the yellow markings. Been ages since seeing these shows.
I wish they’d release The animated series on DVD. I have everything else and adore what few episodes of it I’ve caught. Unless the front sensor protrudes you can’t use the animated scheme. That is one of the differances between TOS and animated.
The romulan D7 has the protruding sensor. Enlarge the TAS pic the one on the left has the sensor obviously protruding. Apparantly the story goes that when they went to draw the ship for the cartoon they bought the AMT model kit as a guide and the instructions wrongly said to make to sensor protrude instead of sit flush so the drawn one has a protruding sensor array on the front.
ah well, without a good image to refer to, and not having a copy of the animated episode in question, I’ve no idea what this protruding sensor looks like.
hmmm, I did see where the animated episodes are available on DVD if looking around online.
