When you highlight panel lines do you always use black? how about different shades of grey . dark gray on a light gray aircraft or darker or ligter shades on green and brown? It seems from all the photos i’ve been looking at that black is the norm.

I only use black for the control surfaces. I always add black to the base color intil I get to a darker color that resembles a shadow. The contrast of black, especially on lighter colors, brings the viewer’s attention to the lines, and not the model. I believe that its much more realistic when it is subtle.

pixilater…thanks, always like the looks that method gives a model, never tried it myself but now i’m gonna have some fun with it

Try neutral gray, black is too stark. Some conciderations are subject, how heavy and where on the real thing it weathers and also color of aircraft, tank, figure…etc. For my 1/72nd and 1/48th scale jets, neutral gray is my universal shade.

My Tomcat’s panels wear accented with a thin Sludge Wash of Tamiya Neutral Gray.

Good Afternoon. What do you use for your medium, and how do you apply? I too use black for control surfaces. For black I use Micron or Millennium pens. For any other color I just “Sludge it”. I have been thinking about trying a drafting pen but that costs $'s. I have used a lead and/or Prismacolor pencils and have been happy with the results. Tnx for your thoughts.

I use a rapid-o-graph pen or a black sludge wash for reccessed panel lines. For raised panel lines I use a very soft drafting lead.

the spanish modelers use sepia colored watercolor.
sepia looks like a dirty brown something resembling a coffee stain.
good for WW2 aircraft.

Good evening one and all. Tnx for your input. Vinny, I couldn’t remember the name of the Rapid-O-Graph. Do you find it durable enough? With lead pencils you always have to be careful to keep the tip off the surface and use only the side of the lead. Hello Obiwan, I have tried water colors , but have never been satisfied. Seems like I was always trying to even out the color. Sepia would be a good color to consider. Will keep it in the back of m y mind. Gotta Go. Gary from Tenn.

Man, I should try some of these methods.
