Hi guys, been away for a while, glad to see that you´re still here. This subject may have been up before, but anyway.
I saw the movie “Flight of the Intruder” the other day and is woundering about the propeller ac that is in the movie. It kind of reminds of a thunderbolt, but looks bigger. Perhaps another Republic creation.
Hopefully some of you might know what it is.
BTW was that a Crusader or a Corsrair II that was in the movie aswell.
Thanks /Johan
It was the Douglas Skyraider
Found it interesting that on the menu to the DVD there is an F-14 Tomcat. Apparently whoever designed it didn’t watch the movie. Don’t forget the Mig-21 and the F-4
in the movie the propeller a/c was skyrider (a1d?)
there was a mig17, a7 corsair, I think f-8 crusider, and for a very brief period f-4 phantom, the SAM was SA-2.
trumpeter makes SA-2 in 1/35 scale, very good quality for the price ($23AUD).
Much of the filming for this movie was done in Hawaii and they used a pair of A-1J Skyraiders for the CAS scenes. Much of the A-6 footage was done with an RC model. It has been several years since I have watched this movie, so I don’t remember exactly which other aircraft were in it. If there were any F-14s in it, that is a major boo boo. VQ-1 just started flying Tomcats operationally during the April 1975 mad panic desertion of Saigon.

Yardbird,
VQ-1 never flew Tomcats. Before 1975, the “Q” flew Douglas EA-3B Skywarriors
and Lockheed EC-121M Warning Stars (Willy Victors). I believe they started getting
their EP-3’s in the 72-73 time frame. The Ea-3B’s were retired after the first Gulf War.

Formerly VQ-1
Here’s a small trivia part that most probably don’t know. Most of the carrier parts were done on the Indy(CV-62), but when they got done with the movie, they weren’t happy with the ending, so they reshot it on board the Ranger(CV-61)( the Indy wasn’t in port and we were) The F-4 you see in the back ground is our ratty Crash& Salvage dud that we used for practice drills. Several of my friends did walk thoughs.
Ray,
When were you with the World Watchers? I was on board Cv-41 when the Whale did it’s final trap and launch.( I took pix of the event)
Eddie
Eddie,
I was a “World Watcher” in 1966-67. From there I moved on to the “VP Navy” until
I got out in '74.
