Here is one way to make pitted rusty metal.

  1. Give the part a good heavy coat of paint, before the paint dries sprinkle some sugar on the wet paint.
  2. When dry rinse the part under running water and use a toothbrush to scrub the sugar off.

It leaves very realistic pitting that looks great when painted highlights are added.
