Hi. Can any body help with the whereabouts of some good pics of the Piper Cub L4 grasshopper, in the olive drab and d-day markings colour scheme, prefeerably online, or even reference books available, any help will be much appreciated. Thanks. I’ll post some pics of the halifax i promised in afew days too. Cheers[:)]
There are two shots showing L-4s with stripes here…
One shows an aircraft with full stripes and the other shows several aircraft, most of which carry partial stripes. If I run across any other images I’ll give a shout…
Fade to Black…
Here’s some good shots of a restored L4 at the Cavanaugh Flight Museum on the museum’s web site. http://www.cavanaughflightmuseum.com/Aircraft/L4-J/Page1.html
Anyone know specific markings for L-4s that served with the 28th Division in Europe?
Hey, good timing, I’m building an L-4 aswell, I figured the somewhat (totally) lacking but dirt cheap hobbycraft kit will give me a good project to learn some scratch building and modifying. I think the “fun” part will be sanding down that clear fusalage and making it transparent again to get the windows right from the J-3.
I think SMER had put out this kit as well, and it was a really good build in 1/48th.
Thank all very much, I’m involved in building a radio controlled one, and wanted to paint it in those markings on the 1/4 scale cub i’m building, to have a look at some progress, check out http://www.hobbycity.co.nz/kraidy/DK/models/L-4%20Cub/piper_l.htm
I’ll be posting more up to date pics soon.
thanks again
Steve
Would point out the first three pictures are of very early L-4s used in pre-war manauvers. The only differences between them and a stock civilian J-3 Cub (other than the paint) is the generator suspended below the fuselage between the landing gears and the trailing anntenna running thru a fitting at the top of the rudder.
The other pictures with the extensive glazing are more representative of the L-4s used overseas in later years.
