Pigments

Hey fellow modelers,

I recently was looking at a color chart for MIG pigments and as I was doing so my wife walked into our bedroom with a box from one of here makeup places and it also had a color chart with it and I realized that many of the shades were the same as those on my chart! I went down to the local beauty supply, which we all frequent from time to time for the emery boards, nippers, cutters etc. but I discovered a wealth of pigments. I am paying about $7.50 at my local hobby shop for MIG pigments and I get 20 ml. of powder, however for $2.99 I get .6 oz. or 1 gram of makeup powder in the same shades if not more and I have tried a few types and brands and it works great!! Go have a look for yourself. My wife says if I keep my eyes open in the cheapo or overstock stores I can get 5 or 10 oz. for $2-3 dollars and like I said the shades and colors run all over the charts, many more shades and colors available. Hope this helps. I mean you get 3-4 times more powder for less than half the price, in more shades and in courser of finer grinds. It opens up a whole new world of weathering and scale color matching!

I get the same deal from using acrylic craft paints that run from .99 cents to 1.99 for 2 oz. bottles while Model Master comes in 1/2 oz. bottles for 2.47 and Tamiya for 2.97 for 3/4 oz…

Same with primers, putties, and such, I buy at auto parts stores and Wal-Mart… Hobby-specific brands of stuff is always over-priced…

It may cost a bit more but MiG pigments will not spoil, which some make up powders (depending on the ingredients) can do. So I would experiment how these make up powders behave in the long run, fungus or dicoloration wil not look good on your model.

If you do find some brands that do not spoil, do not forget to post them. [:D]

Thank you for the advice! So far I have only dealt with natural mineral based powders, with no added ingredients. I know what you are saying though, I have seen some with every additive under the sun! I don’t know how women put this stuff on their bodies? I posted the suggestion so our fellow modelers can try them for themselves, but I will for sure be careful, again thanks for the heads up!!
