I’m finally getting around to straightening up my basement and setting up an area for my modeling bench. Looking for ideas for hobby area layout. Sheetrocking the walls, but thinking of hanging camo netting to cover ceiling joists/insulation (don’t feel like installing a drop ceiling). Anyone have any photos of their hobby area they would like to share to give me some ideas.
Camo net is a freakin’ dust bomber… Every little shake of it will deposit a fresh layer… Before my third ex-wife got my third ex-house, I just sheet-rocked the ceiling over the bench… Quick & easy, didn’t tape or mud it… Added a shop-light and lots of cup hooks to it to hang drying parts and sprues from…
Hans is right, if you want to hang some camo netting for decor effect, do it in the man space not the modeling cave. I’ve got a parachute that someday I will get around to hanging in the stair way that leads down into the man space. It will give the effect that you are walking down through the chute and risers.

which is a great place to host our model club meeting occasionally!
IMO you should keep the workshop basic and functional, save the decor for an area separate from your actual building and painting area. Keep it easy to clean!
Having a finished basement, approx 1000 sqft of Man Space provides a comfortable gathering area with separate bedroom a bathroom. The Man Cave (modeling workshop) is a room of its own which can be secured to keep little visitors (my six grandkids and our two cats) from getting into things I don’t want them into.

LOL, Absolutely… A ceiling is just a ceiling, but if you add the hooks, it’s a tool…[Y]
Because everything is within arm’s reach of my chair in the War Room, be it horizontal or vertical, my wife says I’m lazy. I call it “Economy of Movement”…
I finished off my basement for one purpose only…war room!!!
It is a bit smaller than I want, but the staircase comes down in the center and there was a stove also, kinda out in the middle of nowhere!. The other side is for the laundry, furnace, I also have my paint/photo booth set up over there too.
Anyway, as you round the corner from the steps, you step into my WW2 room which also has my bench, tv is recessed, under the stairs. The main display is all built in with cabinets underneath for the stash. The floor in this room is raised up a foot.

I have to say, I kinda cringed a little when you said you wanted netting, for the ceiling. As was mentioned, the dust! and it would also make great habitat for spiders[:O], which of course will leave the area to cobweb al your builds…BOOOOO. I drywalled the ceiling, framing in around the ductwork, which also makes for great display area by hanging planes by the tail, as visable in a few of the pics(as well as Hawkeyes). I know drywall is a PITA, but you could at least do 1/4" panelling, without all the headache of drywall!
Several years ago my model shop got bannished out to the workshop attached to the garage and my wife posted a sign in the window that said “this has been declared a national disaster area” [:$]. I am thinking of expanding into part of the garage to have a model shop that is seperate from my workshop…no dust.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. The shop area looks well stocked & functional. Kinda what I envision mine to end up like. Jealous over the “Man Cave”. I gave up the space for my Man Cave for an Inlaw Apartment [:(]

Unless I relocate my model bench, I think I’m gonna have the same problem. Too close to my workshop (table saw, etc…). I either gotta rig up a curtain / partition, or think about moving to other side of basement…

Wow. Very nice work/display areas guys. I too have to share a room with my wife. She’s a painter so the room has paint, canvas, drafting table in one area. The other half is mine. Although she takes most of the closet, I do have my stash up on the shelf. My area isn’t as big as the others, but it works for me. We just moved into this house so i’m still trying to get some pics/artwork on the walls on my side. Here’s a few pics.
I had a friend who figured out a way to use Camo Netting to cover walls, without the eventual dust problem.
What he did was sheet rock the entire room, then he painted the sheet rock a nice sky blue. Now, while the paint was still partially wet, he hung the camo netting on the wall from floor to ceiling and let the paint finish drying. After it was dry, he used a satin finish clear spray coat. For the Ceiling, he painted and did the camo on the sheet rock before he hung it and nailed it to the ceiling. The effect was amazing. Using some subdued lighting it made it look like you were sitting under a camo tent under a clear blue sky. It looked great. I actually wanted to do my bedroom like that but my parents nixed the idea… Oh, to be a teen again…

I love it. Mine is pretty bad compared to some of these. I do have one safety suggestion though. You have your trash can under an electrical outlet. I only mention it because I had a trash can by an outlet when I was a kid and a spark from a defective lamp nearly burned the house down. If I hadn’t seen it in time, well… In any case, you might want to consider moving it.
