Pictures from my Trip to Iwo Jima

Here are some pictures I posted of my trip to Iwo Jima.

Be sure to look at both pages.

FYI I use the screen name Leftie over there

Speaking as a former grunt, those pictures were very motivating! I really enjoyed seeing the cave and the photos from the top of Suribachi. So, thanks for posting.

Semper Fi,

Dave

I have to admit, I’m jealous! There were only a couple of opportunities to see Iwo when I was on Okinawa, and I missed out due to “operational commitments” that kept me at the office.

Thanks for sharing! They are amazing pics

Dave

Very impressive. Gives us just a hint of what it must have been like coming ashore all those years ago.

Wow…my grandfather (who died in 1945) and my great uncle (his brother) both fought on Iwo. Aside from period photos, I’ve never really seen images of the island as it appears today. It’s nice to be able to see the places they’ve been.

Great photos.

Jeff

Great photos. Thanks for sharing them. Could you explain more what it’s like there? Who is there? Any body? From what I know, it is basically off limits to civilians.

Great pictures. Thanks for sharing. I’m currently hitting the big sites in Europe when I can. Next month, the Maginot Line. But, that can’t be near as moving as Iwo. Thanks again

[:D] great pics,i like the cave,thanks for shareing.[:D]

The japanese use the airfield on the island, so I don’t think any civilians can come unless it is on a special commemoration or something. The island is only 7.4 square miles with Mt Suribachi and hill 382 being the only noticable landmarks. There are lots and lots of rounds, weapons, and helmets, boots, and other uniform items lying around the island.

Wow, amazing
Kind of nice they preserved it so people can see what it was like

That would be quite a place to visit. So much emotion for so many great men lost.

Those ar amazing pics. Thanks for sharing.

very cool pics! It’s amazing to think the only other time I’ve seen Iwo is in war clips of the battle. Very different place than it was then! stunning

Viewing your pictures of Iwo Jima was one of the most emotionally moving things I have done in many years. A very fitting tribute to the men on both sides who fought and died there.

On about the fourth of fifth picture , what are you holding?

Do they search you so you don’t ‘steal’ the stuff? To me it would be kind of like robbing a grave to take a helmet or something like that.

Tried to access your photos, but the site it led me to indicated that they had moved. The new site didn’t seem to have the pix readily listed.
As info, I had the privilege of videotaping a presentation by the last survivor of both flag raisings at Iwo, Cpl. Chuck Lindberg, USMC, on 5-9-05, at our local senior center. We made a 30-minute video for our local Public Access Channel. Chuck, at 84, delivers a good presentation with some interesting facts. If anyone is interested, there is a video available at: http://www.mediatechnics.com/iwo-jima-the-last-flag-raiser-dvd.php. (I am not involved w/ this site in any way.) If anyone is interested in a copy of the presentation he made, let me know. Our public access channel does make copies available for a nominal charge.

I got the same “we have moved” message – would love to see the pics!

[#ditto][banghead], love to see them too.
