I’m 95% finished with my Merkava. I’m not sure about the paint color, the instructions say Desert Yellow (XF-59), but it came out a little orangeish? anyways, this was my first attempt at preshading, and I think i may have sprayed over the black shading a bit too much, but overall I’m pleased with it. I also went light on the weathering, since I wanted to focus on the preshading. Comments are welcome.
jcheung5150,
You say you’re 95% finished. What’s left to do?
I think the color looks good. You may need to hit the guide teeth with a bit of steel. Some places (in my opinion) show a bit too much of the preshading.
Overall, I’d say a very good job.

panther44, I need to add the antennaes and the tow cables, otherwise its done. but you are right about some areas showing the preshading too much, and yes, the guide teeth need to show some wear and tear. I’ll do some touch ups. Thanks!
Erik, yes its the Tamiya kit. it was a very easy kit to build. I was surprised that it only took a few days to put together.
Steve, thanks for the kind words. I’m still trying to master the handmade zim on my German armour, unfortunately it hasn’t been turning out too well.
Very nicely done. I actually don’t think you overdid it with the paint over the black at all. There is definitely some very visible degradation. If you had sprayed less basecoat over the black, the contrast would have been too high, and you do not want THAT much contrast. It would have looked very cartooney.
I’m no expert on IDF colors, but your Merkava’s paint looks to be reasonably close to what I’ve seen. I’ve never been a big fan of shading panel lines, but that aside, it looks like you hit your effect pretty well. If you do feel like it looks a tad heavy, you could do some light post shading with you base color or a lightened version of it, just to knock down the contrasts a wee bit.
All in all, a fine build of an interesting looking tank. [tup][tup]
well, I guess I should just have faith in Tamiya and assume that their color recommendations are accurate. thanks again for the kind words. I still need to add antennaes and down the road I’ll try to make some stowage for the back like tarps or bags. But for now I’ll leave it and move on to my neglected halftrack flammpanzerwagen…
