Photos of my P-40b

Hey guys!

Okay, the p-40b is up on my site. I had SO MUCH FUN working on this ac. It was a total learning experience (arent they all) and I’m grateful to everyone here who put in their 2 cents and helped me out when i had questions. The most exciting thing for me is that this plane looks better to me in person than it does in photos. It’s the first one that’s starting look more like a replica than a toy. Looks GREAT, Mer ! Like its been baking out in that hot tropical sun ! You are improving at a rapid rate, & I wouldn’t be surprised to see you in the Reader Gallery sometime soon. Keep at it ! I especially like the oil stains & the exhausts !

Can you explain the scribing technique to me?

As for the flat finish, all I can say is practice on some plastic sheet. Try different ratios interms of paint to thinner.
Speakin of paint which brand of gloss/flat did you use again??
Overall the Warhawk looks awesome and the shading helps set it off.
As for the decals they look great because you really cant see any silvering or the actual decal thickness. Ya know the way you described them on your site that is.
I totally forgot that the ol Monogram P-40 had raised lines[:0][;)]. With you scribing them, at first I thought it was another mgfs Kit[:D][:)].

Merideth, you’re coming along nicely. Glad someone likes my engraving technique! It sure is a helluvallot easier than using diggers…

Anyhoo, you asked me about the panel lines on my Spitfire. They were all done with pastels, a mixture of black and browns. I chose that particular mix because it was an Aussie Spit, and they often times looked like they’d been through a war. (Wait, they were…) Anyhoo, I wanted to suggest a little dust/dirt with the browns.

And I never did answer on the flat finish…

My ‘secret weapon’ isn’t all that exciting. I simply use tri-grit sanding sticks to sand-down my final coats of Future before adding a bit of flat. The dark gray part of the stick is great for sanding down clear coats to get rid of dust or other roughness in the finish. You just have to be careful not to sand through to the underlying paint or decals.

If you’re using Future, put a buncha coats on before you sand. When you’re done, just wipe off the sanding dust with a slightly damp rag. Here’s the sticks I use:

I use only these these types of sticks for this purpose, but not all tri-grits are created equal.

They’re somewhat expensive, but if you getcher hands on some Squadron tri-grits, (the last two on the right) they’re what you wanna use for this; and they’re a good gauge for buying other similar sticks which are usually less expensive. (If you’d like I can send you one of mine…)

I’ve got several tri-grits that came from a number of sources, and some are way too rough for this technique. So if you’re going to buy some of these at a drugstore or dollar store or whatever, compare them with the Squadron stick to make sure the grit of the dark gray area is similar.

Also, if you can’t get a dead flat finish, that’s not really a bad thing. Many aircraft had a slight sheen to the finish, even if the paint was technically flat. But in the end, it comes down to personal preference…

Always love that P-40 look. Monogram still builds up to a nice kit. Raised panel lines can be overcome. Nice job!

Good job on the Hawk… I don’t know where you found the patience for scribing all of those lines, considering all of the other work required just to get the model built without gaps, etc.

I only did the cowl panels and fasteners, restoring the raised rivots on the upper and lower fuselage… Lazy, I guess, but I do like the look of the raised detail on the Monogram P-40B… Its just so hard to preserve it with all of the poor fit issues and subsequent sanding, etc.

I’m working on my second tigershark and, honestly, don’t care if I ever do another one… I’m really looking foward to working on something where so much fitting and sanding shouldn’t be required… Like my Tamiya Dewoitine [:D] !!! Of course, the PE and camo will be the issues there!!!

thanks guys! i’m glad you approve…the wierd thing about the photos is tht the shading on the panel lines looks MUCH darker than it does on the actual plane…it’s much more subtle with a lot less contrast on the actual model…strange that it looks so dark in the photos.

steve thanks for the tips, after doing the panel lines on this ac with the graphite, I think i’ll try the next one with something a little lighter, a little more gray…also thanks for the tips on the tri-grit sticks…i will definitely give that a go!

mike between your thinner/clear tips and steve’s tri-grit method, i’m bound to get this flat coat thing figured out…oh, i use model masters lusterless flat and future for the under gloss coat to set the decals on and avoid the dreaded silvering…and thanks for thinking it was another manuf. kit [:D], makes me feel like i did a good job with the scribing!

Fantastic job!!![:D] now you got me so intrested in finishing my old Monogram P-40B, Iput it off a few years ago now when I get home I’m going to finish it but in natural metal though, also thanks for sharing with your progress, + I need to add thank for the INFO on decals

hey cuda you’re a braver soul than i to think of finishing that monogram kit in bare metal…let me just warn you that it had big gaps, misaligned parts and was a mess to putty and sand…just something to keep in mind when considering the pristine surface required for a bare metal finish…if you do it though, i’ll be psyched to see it as i bet it’ll look awesome!

I ment what I said about the P-40 being another mfg. I really dont think you came out and said what kit it was in any of your earlier e-mails, If ya did I am sooo sorry[:p][:p][;)].
Hey you are one step over me when it comes to rescribing a whole enter kit. I still get a lil nervous at times when I go over lines that have been sanded let alone to recribe “new” lines[:0][B)][:D].
Two thumbs up to you…!!! So whats next??

mike, thanks pal! i’m glad you think it looks okay! when i look at 'er close up i see where i needed to do a better job of puttying (wingroots)…and when i do this plane again, as i’ve told you i’d like to, I’d like to get a better kit…recommendations welcome! next up is the testors p-47d…so more rescribing the panel lines as i hate the raised ones…cross your fingers for me on that one! [;)]

I am amazed at the level of skill you have shown in your first few planes…I wasmn’t to that level until probably my 15th or 20th…and looking at that Tiffie, I wonder if I am even there now :wink:

I showed my wife the pics on your site and she was pretty impressed as well…maybe it’ll get her motivated to get back to work on her P-36 Hawk :slight_smile:

Thanks for sending me the e-mail and the website info. I can’t believe that you are a “newbie”. I love the early P-40 without the shark’s mouth all the time. Your oil looks like oil on the belly. Are you ever going to do up a Spitfire?
