We are lucky enough to have a sample of both of these at the Seattle Museum of Flight. They sit side by side, and it’s cool to see how big the Phantom is compared to how small the Fishbed is. In particular I was surprised by how small the wings of the Fishbed are. But looking at them together you can see why spotting the Fishbed was such a problem, it’s tiny (relatively speaking).

What can you say there?

Both aircraft are legends in their own right,
both well loved by those who flew them,
both battle proven (over and over again),
both instantly regognizable and unmistakable,
both with increadible longevity for combat type aircraft,
both with worlwide respect as prime exemplars of combat aircraft design,
both highly adaptable beyond their intended initial roles.

I could go on, but you see my point.

Both aircraft have nothing more to prove, 40+ years service around the world for both types, both leaving indelable and significant marks in aviation history.

Let the legends be legends, they are beyond comparison, both of them.

I am partial to the F-4 Phantom. I worked on them for over 20 years in the USAF. It was asked to do thing it wasn’t designed to do. It was forced to use sub standard missiles in an eye ball to eye ball fight.

OBTW, I don’t know where you got the information on the Phantom, but some of it isn’t accurate.

If you’re asking which would win, here’s my idea:
-Whichever had element of surprise
-MiG-21 close-in (F-4E maybe)
-F-4 long-distance if the pilots screwed the rules of f**king engagement
