I purchased the 1/72nd scale Hasegawa F-110A Kit. I know that the F-110A is an F-4B. What I want to do is build it as an F-4N from the mid 70s (VF-111 CAG bird). My question is, what external differences are there between an F-4B and an F-4N? Also are the kit’s national insignia and stencils correct for an F-4N?
To get the ball rolling, there’s probably more differences among Bs that there is between a B and an N. The N was a rewired and beefed up B updated to the latest B avionic configuration. My old notes state that the N may have had a slatted stabilizer and that it may be impossible to tell a late B from an N except by reading the designation above the Bureau Number on the airplane that you want to model.
The real Air Force F-4s didn’t have the probe which left room in the rear cockpit for a right hand console that the Navy F-4s didn’t have…
Walt Fink also noted a while back that the Hasegawa kits have the Air Force horizontal stabilizer with the prominent little triangular stiffener that the Navy F-4s didn’t have.
After further research, it appears likely that all Ns - and some Bs - had the slatted stabilizer and had their inboard wing slats locked up. After the first conversions, all Ns - probably no Bs - got the ECM antennas on the upper side of the engine inlets which extend one fuselage station farther aft than the same antennas on the F-4J.
Unfortunately, I don’t know what the Hasegawa F-110 looks like. The first F-110s were literally Bs but the production F-110/F-4Cs had the wide main gear tires and corresponding bulge on the wings and the refueling probe replaced by a refueling socket in the dorsal spine. The back seat area was completely different - dual controls, right side console, different instrument panel, etc.
I don’t know what markings come with the Hasegawa kit, but looking at pictures of the bogus F-110 (repainted F-4B), the intake markings and ejection seat warnings are clearly wrong for the F-4N. The national insignia looks okay.
The kit is the Hasegawa F-4B/N with F-110 Decals.
Does the kit still have raised panel lines and the incorrect wheelwells?
It has recessed panel lines. I’m not sure about the wheelwells. Are you referring to the difference in air pressure between AF and Navy?
the F-4 C/D/E’s all had the extended wheel well to accomodate the wider main wheels.
I built a B some years ago ( Hasegawa), the tail was right but the wings were wrong.
The RF4B they released earlier on this year had the 'Late model wing ’ cop out.
