Pearl Harbor '13 build thank you

reading through all the posts on group builds and then the fantastic builds that are currently in progress got me to thinking about pearl harbor again.

when i joined this site the first group build i joined was the pearl harbor build of that year. the knowledge both of the history and of the plastic was something that ingrained itself in me. so with that here is the proposition…

beginning july 26, the day of the us embargo on war material to japan, and ending on dec 7 at 7:55 a.m. , the time of the beginning of the attack.

-all subjects are game. military or civillian.

-all ships in the harbor, all ships in the japanese combined force, are game.

-the uss enterprise is game, she docked dec 8 and some of her aircraft landed durring and after the attack.

-subjects include naval, air, army (armor, arty, and soft skinned), civilian, marine, and coast guard.

-all subjects must have been on oahu at the time of the attack. the only exception is uss enterprise but she must appear as she did that fateful day.

-i reserve the option to close entries when time will not allow the completion of the build.

these can and most likely will be reviewed and changed around.

my only request is that all entries are completed and not left in the unfinished shelf queen status. the spirit of this build is the most important factor.

so thoughts?

I don’t know that much of the attack on Pearls Harbor though…

I have Tamiya’s big A6M2b Zero here in my stash. Maybe I’ll give it a try…

I like this–especially so since I built the USS New Orleans (Trumpeter 1/700) for the more recent Pearl Harbor GB; and the cat knocked it off the mantle in less than two months, leaving nothing but pieces. If I can find her still for sale somewhere, I’d like to build another kit of the NO boat.

good subject. although the coloring has been debated for years. should be a good build for you.

i followed along with that group build, i remember your build. shame it was sunk later in battle. would be cool to see it built up again.

my hat is off to you. messing with pe in that scale is not much fun. and that is coming from a guy who has to use an optivisor for most of the stuff he works on.

Okay, I must be totally off my rocker. [:S] I will commit tentatively. This means I reserve the right to resign from the GB. I also will not collect a badge until I finish the build.

My entry is a 1:48 scale B-17. In the movie Tora, Tora, Tora one pilot in the group of B-17s they were bringing to Hawaii from California says “What a way to fly into a war. Unarmed and out of gas” The flight of 12 planes arrived over Hickam Field 30 minutes after Japanese began their attack. All of the B-17s were defenseless. The planes carried no machine guns or ammunition in order to carry more fuel and less weight on the long flight from California.

Here’s a little bit of my family historical trivia. One of th B-17s that arrived over Hickam during the
Japanese attack was accepted by the US Army on November 29, 1941 with the serial number 41-2429. My Uncle Sgt Robert V. Copley was on a B-17 which was accepted by the US Army December 1, 1941 with serial number 41-2435. Both aircraft took off from 7 mile airdrome for bombing missions at or near Rabaul. Both planes were shot down, but not on the same day. My Uncle like many of these crews never came home.

this is the reason i began doing my personal build and then the public group builds on this subject.

i had missed this, the whole point of a build of this nature is to share info about the history and the equipment involved. i am in no way an expert on the attack but i will be more than willing to share the information i have.

i have also edited the title of the thread to more reflect the subject matter.

I’m interested Joe. It would be a 1/72 Wildcat using the Starfighter decals sheet that I used for the P-40 I did for the last Pearl Harbour GB.

tony that should be a good one. the f4f-3 early was present as both navy and marine.

now an apology. started this thread and then I was mia. been sick. finally back up and going but for a week I would check in but zero posting anywhere.

That will be good to see, Tony. What are you going to use? Admiral just released an F4F-3 which is supposed to be very accurate, but I haven’t started it yet. Hobby Boss’s F4F-3 comes with F4F-4 wings, and I’ve heard that Hasegawa’s does too.

I’m working on a -3 converted from Academy’s -4, but I had to rescribe the wings.

just sitting here thinking about what my project should be. i have a few, understatement, that would fit. but a couple are high on the possibilities. i have a magazine that a buddy sent to me showing two honey stuarts in front of a palace in honolulu on dec 8 1941. thinking that would be cool. tried it once before then found i had the wrong variant for what was in the picture.

another i have in mind is, in my 32 years of trying to build i have never done a kingfisher. i have two i got last year. they look interesting to me.

of course i also have a b-17c/d and b-18 in 1/72. plus multiple p-40’s. i have some pictures and drawings of the disappearing gun, and some other stuff that might work. that 1/350 arizona will however stay snug and secure on the shelf. not picking it up for this one.

of course i could also just be bumping this thread to the top so it wont be lost in the pages.
