What is the overall opinion for which PBY-5A Catalina kit is the best in any scale. I would appreciate any input.
Any of the Academy kits would be recommended. All are 1/72 scale.
well in 1/48 scale i think monogram is the only one. i have one still in box. looks like a nice kit. ive seen some good finished ones as well. as for other scales someone else should have an answer.
1/48 Monogram is what you make of it. Parts fit very nicely. Plenty of aftermarket options. And above all, easier to work with than 1/72 scale and plenty of opportunity to provide some nice detail. I built mine a few years ago before I learned more about detailing, masking, finishing, etc., but I’m still somewhat happy with the end result. Had to do it with the wheels up. Plan on putting it in a oceanic rescue scene diorama one day.
The Academy Kits aren’t that bad… Especially if you think that 1/48 is too big. Of course, 1/48 has all the nice detail. Oh, and Academy also have the PBY-2 and the PBY-5.
I have the 1/48th Monogram kit, it seems to look ok but I havent started to build it yet.
