What is the best way to deliver pastels to a camoflauged tank for weathering purposes. Is it possible to follow up with an oil drybrushing?/
Thanks!

I’m sure you can apply them the same way I do aircraft. I use one of those triangle shaped applicator sponges that come with eyeshadows. They put on a smooth, light application. I really don’t have luck with any type of brush. You can then use a flat brush to feather the pastels in for a gradual, faded look. I apply my pastels very last after all washes, drybrush, etc. You also can’t clear coat pastels either. They and the effect will disappear. Hope this helps…

Never thought of using the triangular sponges. I just use a good sable hair or camel hair brush. IF you go a little heavy on the pastels you can successfully clearcoat over them. I’ve done it. Another technique I have used is to go liberal on the clear so it stays wet for a bit, just shy of dripping and running and then blowing the pastels right onto the model, they stick really well. I have to be honest thoguh I have only used that particular technique on desert fielded armor, and the results were great.
You can apply a clear coat over pastel weathering if you do a couple of things. First, the pastels have to be applied in a heavier coat than the final appearance that you want (it’ll take some experimentation to find the proper amount of pastel coating you need to apply before clear coating). And secondly, the clear has to be sprayed on (either spray can or airbrush).
A wash application or dry brushing will destroy your pastels, so do the wash prior to applyihg the pastels. Another thought is that pastels hold much better to a flat painted surface than to a gloss painted surface.
UPS…
sorry, bad joke!
I use my wife’s eye make-up applicator or one of her make-up brushes. They are designed to “hold” fine powders like make-up (and pastels) and work real well. You can use the applicator to gently “force” the pastels in areas of greater wear. Use the brush to “dust” areas where your looking for a dusted effect.
I would not suggest “following-up” with any type of dry/wet brushing as it will elliminate any of the pastel effect.
