Pastel Chalk Recommendations

I’m looking for some insight/recommendations as to what pastel chalk works best for armor and aircraft. Their are loads of choices, everything from Squadron to Michaels. Any input as to what people are using and the good and bad.
Thanks,

I use Pastel Chalks that I purchased from Micro Mark a few years ago. There were two sets, 12 each 1/4 “x 3” sticks in each set. One set was a range of greys from white to black and the other set was browns and oranges. Covers just about anything I want when weathering. Having said that, I think that any artists supply, LHS (if they carry them) or a good chain store (Hobby Lobby, Michael’s etc) should be able to help you find what you want.

I use Conte pastels. I got these @ Hobby Lobby and at an art store. I use these because they seem to stick better than some others I’ve tried. Dito to checking your local store for help. Good Luck!

Thanks for the responses. I’ve been looking at a few different types. I just wasn’t sure which ones worked well with models. Thanks.

I use the Mungyo Earth Tone set picked up from my local Hobby Lobby. They are artist pastels (non-greasy) in the hard square sticks and are perfect for weathering all sorts of earth tones.

Just about any brand of pastel chalk will work. I’m currently using Quartet alphacolor soft pastels that I picked up at the LHS. Don’t make the mistake I made and try to use oil-based artist chalk. These do not work well at all. Just tell the clerk/owner that you want oil-free or greaseless pastels and they should point you in the right direction.

Enjoy your modeling…

I’ve start using MMP Pigment Powders, they are a little pricey, but a little goes a long way, they come in many different colors and are very fine, they work great!

I’m late showing up for this thread. Chalk pastel pencils are what I found a couple of days ago at Michael’s. They’re of the brand name “General’s”. They come in sets. Dickblick has them too… probably open stock individual pencils at Dickblick. I’ve already tested a few colors on red and white flat Gunze paint. They work great.

My square stick chalk pastels are Alphacolor. I have two sets, earth tones and grays.
