Panzer base color.... & Dry brushing

  1. What is the correct actual base color used on German tanks when they started painting them all the same color right out of the factory?

  2. I read the article of “washing” and it worked great but i really don’t understand dry brushing and how it’s used on a camo-ed tank. Is there another article on it somewhere?

At the beginning of War 2 all German Vehicles were released from the factory in Dark Grey, about 1943 this colour was changed to dark yellow.

I will let somebody else explain dry brushing to you, although I use the technique I am not sure that I could explain it properly, so over to the forum for help.

  1. I’m assuming youre talking about ww2 german armor. I think early in the war tanks were gray based, then dark yellow, red oxide, and also dark green. I dont know which order red and green went. I usually dont look up paint schemes because im still new to armor and dont like insane accuracy.

  2. Dry brushing is to make details more visible. Most people use the base coat lightened with white. You can also use a metal color to show paint worn down to the steel. You dip your brush into the color you want to use and then wipe it off on a towel. Check the brush by brushing a piece of paper or something. If any paint comes off, wipe the brush with the towel again. When no paint comes off, then you can brush it on your model. Remember to experiment. Pantsless gives a pretty good description of dry brushing … I’ll only add to start out very slowly … it may seem like you’re not achieving much with the first few passes of your brush but it doesn’t take very much to overdo it.
Practice, practice, practice !!!

Welcome OzmO. Have fun in the forums. Feel free to ask anything. The Dark Olive Green base was authorised in November of 1944. The Red primer seems to have started in late summer 1944. Near the end of the war the Germans even reverted back to Panzergrey, due to paint shortages.
