WOW… that’s great!! i really like the camo job. please keep the pics coming!

Oh crap, now you’ve gone and done it. Your giving me ideas. Now I’m going to go and drop everything and start something new… Again!!!

Great camo scheme. Where did you get the idea? or inspiration?

Outstanding work! Was the zim done by hand? It looks great!

That looks fantastic. The camo and zimmerit are superb

Hi guys…

The Zim is by hand…yuk to resin and yuk yuk yuk to etch zim…

The cammo was done using the new (ish) Winsor and Newton Water based oils…trying them out and the seem to work well…in fact I like them a lot…they dry QT with a little Iso mixed in after the inital water thinning (but ONLY after you have water into them)

Etch skirts and bits are from Edward and folded with a 8 inch Mk’R’’ Hold & Fold (natrally, only the BEST tool would do  for a Panzer )

Tools to add…Buff to spray and MMPs to weather (both Airbrush and dry applications)…then think about how to mount it…and NO…no more water for a bit

Glad you like guys

AJ

Looks great! I didn’t know they put zim on the outside of the skirting around the turret as I thought the skirting was supposed to keep shaped charges away from direct contact with the armour anyways. Love the handmade zim though. I just tried my first hand-made zim on a jagdpanther and it didn’t look too bad.

Yep…a lot of Pz 4 H and Js had the Turret skirt Zim…a lot of Hs had it on the side skirts at first as well

BTW…The Skirts were to prevent Russian Anti Tank rifle fire…not shaped/magnetic charges…same on the Panther and the PzIII

Thanks for the nice comments as well mate…Ta

Looks terrific, AJ. Really a different look to it. Very nice!

I have a Tamiya Pz 4 ausf J with turret skirts and I think I will try the same thing. Thanks for the info about anti tank rifle fire. Do you mean an actual anti tank gun in (like the 76mm) or one of those nasty big caliber rifles that you actually shot from the shoulder? I am curious as to how the turret skirt would do any different to a solid round than extra applied armour. Or maybe the turret skirts were just easier to install, what with all the different angles, etc on the turret. Also, would a magnetic charge do any damage to the turret if it was stuck to the turret skirt? I thought a shaped charge was supposed to operate at a very precise distance from the surface it was intended to penetrate. I always thought that the skirts were intended to disrupt the effectiveness of this. Sounds like they were just extra armour applied in the easiest fashion. Any comments on this? I would appreciate the info and maybe a few sources for further reading. I will try and post photos of my Pz iv with zim when I finish it.

Thanks.

Looks absolutely first rate, AJ. The zim and cam are outstanding.

bismark9 Hi…I refer to Anti-Tank RIFLES…not guns…these were really bad news for the Germans…lots of lost tracks etc…could also dammage tracks etc…without much care for human life the Russians used them a lot…at very close range the could also cause lots of dammage to the vision slits as well !!!..and who cared about a few lost men ! :(… basicly the skirts were ‘stand-off’ armour and the zim was for Mag mines…the Russians did not use hollow charge projectiles much if at all…

Buff…cheers mate

AJ

That build looks top notch, great job on the zim and camo- very interesting[:)][tup]

beanskreativeworks…cheers…I have taken the camo from a pic of a panther …and ‘guessed’ that the Pz4s might of also been painted the same way…with a little guess work as well… (hey its German armour so who cares He He, spoken as a Russian fan)
Really however the main reason for this is to try the Winsor&Newton water mix oils…which are really good so far…they bleed thru as you can see…which is the effect I am trying to achive…as well a doing some Zim, which is quite new to me with putty

AJ

Hi again,

I was looking through Squadron’s “Pz IV in Action” and saw several black and white photos of the zim applied to the turret skirt. Thanks for the info about the anti-tank rifles. What calibre were these? I’ll try a google search for some info on them.

cheers

Hi…The main Russian AT Rifles were 14.5mm…PTRD-41 (single shot) and the PTRS-41 (5 round Mag Semi-auto) were the most popular from what I know (limmited :))

Alasdair

I know that camo you’re talking about, that is why I was wondering(am I seeing the wrong tank? -got me confused there comrade). Great job on the paint, (-speaking as I am a Russian fan-he he, -we are on hostile territory here -any minute now them Germans are gonna barge in)[(-D]

Excellent work, and it’s nice to see the workhorse of the Panzer force being built in addition to the glamorous Tigers and Panthers. Pz IVs and Stugs were the armor most commonly used by the Germans.

Thanks…and yep…Pz 4s and Stug are better…easy to hit with big 122mm guns He He
More fun to build as well I think…I agree

AJ

“Speaking as a russian fan as well”, the paint and zimmerit are wonderful. How long till the
Stormovik comes to play? [:D]
