Panel lines - How to?

In the Tamiya annual catalogue book thing, the is a McDonnell Douglas F4 1/32 Phantom Fighter, just how do you paint the panel lines and rivets etc without spoiling the lovely white finish?

Thanks to all who reply

Kevin

not sure but i think you may be talking a wash. a mixture that you use a qtip and put on the model it sits in the recessed areas and hilights the detail. for more you might want to check out swanny’s site. he has a much better discription.

btw welcome to fsm.

First of all [#welcome] to the forums Kevin. Now to the issue at hand. I would have to agree with fightnjoe and check out swanny’s site.

welcome kevin[:)]

good to have another person from this side of the pond!![;)]
i agree with the above, and include the link below to swanny1s site:

http://www.swannysmodels.com/Weathering.html

i can vouch for the technique in the link as i used them on the P-40B i just finished for the Pearl Harbour Group Build; i also used the “salting” technique found on swanny’s site for the first time on that build and that worked great too!

hope it all works out for you.

what do you like to build generally?

nick

What do I biuld?
Well most things really, I always built models as a kid, but now in middle life got back into it last year, I had a Tamiya 1/350 Enterprise kit which had been half messed up in the attic ! decided to finish it off and it all just continued from there.

I completed the Enterprise but it as not very good, but great to learn on, after that I built the Tamiya Missouri and at the moment completeting th F14 Tomcat.

I have since purchased more kits ! Another 1/350 Enterprise, the 1/350 New Jersey, 1/350 King George, Abrahams tank, APV, and lots of diorama minatues.

Once the Tomcat is complete, I am going to build an Iraqi diorama using the above 1/35th kits, and then I am onto the New Jersey which I want to build in water.

I am also keen on R/C I have nearly completed a restoration of an old Tamiya Hilux, and I am also learning to fly a R/C helicopter, which a week ago I crashed and had to buy a whole new kit !

What about you?

Kev

Kevin_cambs_uk hi
firstly i envy you being a darn site closer to hannants than i am!! (putney, london)[:p]
re what i build i guess i’m a bit boring[B)]. like you i grew up modelling, had a big sabbatical, then started again a few years back (i’m nearly 32); as a result of what i grew up around, i model exclusively WWII in 1/35 (armour) and 1/48 (aircraft).
i managed to drag my girlfiend (the light of my life[:)]) all the way up to lowestof for my birthday treat last year and took a peak inside some of those ship kits that you mention…wow did they look good !!(i did the usual hood, bismark, yamato when i was small[:)])…the only problem is that i’d have absolutely nowhere to put them!!
by the way, myself and 2 guys from these forums are meeting at the hornchurch southern expo this sunday, 12ish onwards…if you want to join us let me or djmodels99 know…i will have the missus in tow as will he i believe.
regards,
nick

Welcome to the forums, Kevin. It’s good to have another Kevin in here.[swg][C):-)]

Funny about your girlfriend being in tow my wife doesn’t model as such but loves models and stuff, but she wants me to build a garden railway !

1/35 military is my next step, never built tanks or stuff yet, but this I am very much llooking forward too. My problem with all my models is I get so impatient to se them finished and end up ruining bit of them!

As for being envious, I nev er thought anyone would be envious of me living in cambridgeshire ! I am a yorkshire man at heart, came south for the weather !! as for London, well I would prefer that as my flight instructor lives there !

Its a 200 mile trip for my lessons. Many thanks for the invite Sunday but I am otherwise engaged but thats a shame some other time maybe, have you any pictures posted anywhere?

bve good !

take it easy

Kev

I got a tip today at my local chapter meeting of IPMS Norway, Bergen, wich simply says use a soft pencil with a sharp tip and follow the lines with it
Hope this was helpful

Kevin_cambs_uk hi[:)]
unfortunately i don’t have any pics posted[V][V][V]…i have quite a hi-spec computer but cannot make it “talk” to my digital camera; i tihnk i must have usb ports disabled or something - i have no idea as i don’t “do IT”!![:p]
as it is i have a gigantic backlog of pics on my camera waiting to be uploaded…
oh well.

nick

Kevin,

[#welcome]

…and here’s an option to the washing technique for panel lines.

http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=15131

hehe, I was wondering the same thing myself. Recessed panel lines are fine, but it’s the raised rivet and panel line detai is what gets me.

Nick,

shame about your pc, I do IT for a living ! have done for the last 14 years ! ironic !
well if you get them, on the pc let me know, you can see mine in the gallery on www.modelwarships.com, just look for my name, Kevin Long, forget the enterprise as thats rubbsih, I have the kit again and intend to do it properly, but my Missouri is pleasing,

my tomcat is nearing the end and I have just started on my tank !

what you up to model wise?

I second the motion for using pencils.

I tried pens and washes but never got great results. Pencil is easy to do, gives very good results, is very cheap, and most importantly, very easy to erase when you screw! I always do my penciling after the first color coat. Flat paint gives just the right amount of tooth. You can also get a good weathered effect by dry brushing it - the tiny amount of residue left behind is perfect.

It is a meticulous job however and can take a lot of time. It’s actually one of my favorite finishing tasks.

Cheers,

Steve
