PaK40 Ammo

Can anyone tell me: Is there any difference between the PaK40/2 and /3 other than the barrel length? My hobby shop has nice turned-brass 7.5cm AT rounds packaged for the Marder III (PaK40/3), and I want them for my DML Marder II(PaK40/2). Are these not the same 75mm rounds?

T’anks.

They are the same. Know that past mid-war, most of the Pak 40 rounds had steel casings and not brass (due to shortages).

One downside about the Tamiya turned brass rounds is that half of them are incomplete, meant to fit specifically into the ammo rack of the Tamya Marder III kit. You get 4 complete rounds, four empty cartridges and ten incomplete rounds (meant for the Marder ammo rack).

An alternative is to get the AFV Club Pak 40 rounds & containers, decals, etc.

I’ve used both, and can verify that the AFV Club offering is the superior set. You get a lot more for the money, and you can paint the rounds brass or steel, depending on your need.

I’m not 100% sure, but I don’t think the Tamiya rounds will fit the DML holders on either the Marder II or the Marder III H. I’ve not personally tried them, but I recall others having issues. The rounds didn’t even fit all of the Tamiya holders (the short 3-round holder on the left side for example was too narrow), so it’s doubtful they’ll play nice with the DML holders. Can’t comment at all on the AFV Club set, they might be the better way for you to go.

Just like my old 1943 steel pennies!

Don’t recall the mfr, but these are 2-piece; projectile can be inserted into the casing or not.

Thanks, Roy!

Would these be painted? Seems they would rust if not coated with something?

No cartridges would ever be painted in the conventional sense. They were coated with a clear lacquer to stand up to the elements.

That makes sense. Thanks again, Roy.
