Pair of 234's

If you’ve noticed that I haven’t posted anything for sometime that’s because I decided to torture myself by tryng to build 4 - 1/72 Dragon 234’s at the same time for the Bombergrupp GB. That’s right 4… It should be obvious to those of you that have built these dragon aricraft kits before that I had never built a Dragon offering before this. Otherwise common sense would have prevailed and I would have thought twice about trying to build so many at once. The kits have great detail but are a bear to build. Some of the troubles were my own fault (using old paint) but the fit on the 234C’s engines in particular was awful. Here are two of the completed builds. The other two are about 50% complete and will stay that way for awhile until I get up the courage to finish them.

I added AM seat belts and the kit came with some PE. Aeromaster decals were used for both.

Hey Dave,

I’m glad to see that you finished both of the 234s. They look absolutely amazing, especially the arctic schemed one. I’m glad at least one of us deadline-racers has accomplished something. My Hs 123 hasn’t been touched since the end of the GB due to family visits, work, and waiting on a spray booth. Ah well. [sigh]

Dave,

Now those are stunning! Are you certain they are 1/72? I cannot even imagine masking that arctic one in 1/48, let alone 1/72…

Thanks for sharing them Dave, truly works of art! [bow]

Excellent work Dave, the result certainly paid off for the effort involved. I’ve never tackled this kit, but you’re not the first to complain about the lousy fit.

Regards, Rick

Truly beautiful work Dave. What ever the problems you encountered were , they don’t show.

Frank, Rick, Marc, thanks for the comments guys. Means a lot after a difficult build.

Cardshark, Thanks, hope to see your Hs 123 posted someday!

Great looking planes there Dave, especially after hearing about your fit woes with them!

Really nice work there Razor. Can’t tell that they ever posed any issues, and 1/72 scale to boot! I don’t know how y’all work with such small pieces.

Again, wonderful craftsmanship.

(BTW, how many units had these? I thought these came out really late in the War?)

Dave

Dave, they look great[tup] As a kid I built the Revell I think with a buzz bomb on it’s back.

Well done,

Roy

Tom, Thanks! [:)]

Dave, they were late war. I’m not sure of the dates and how many units had them but they were used mainly for photo recon as early as the D-day landings. The four engined 234C model I don’t think made it to the operational units and only one or two ever existed so the markings and bomb load are fictional.

Roy, you mean this one…

I built this a couple of years ago and decided that since it was fictional anyway that I’d have some fun with it and practice some painting techniques. Buzz bombing the Anzio beachhead, hey… it could have happened! [:P][:o)]

They’re both beauties, Dave. I’m glad you hung in there and finished them

[tup]

Both of them look great. Very, very nice work on the paint. Nice looking cockpit, too.

Dave Great work they look super [tup][tup][tup], Love the paint job.

Cheers

Bear

ps Do you think with those 2 beasts done we might see some movement on the snowberry[}:)]

Mucker, Jon, thanks guys, I appreciate your comments.

Bear, thanks! I imagine I will get to the snowberry soon but first I need to do a quick easy one to get the modeling mojo back! [:-^]

Your Luftwaffe bombers turned out very well, despite the building difficulties.

Darwin, O.F. [alien]

That’s the one. Is that the Revell kit? I did the splinter camo on mine. Your’s looks great.

Roy

On the Discovery channel they seem to have Gunthur Rall on alot. He did fly them near the end of the war.

Roy

Darwin, thanks! [:)]

Roy, that is indeed the old 1/72 Revell kit that can be built as B or C model. Pretty chunky, but I bought it second hand from someone when I was just getting back into the hobby and before I knew about the dragon kits. I don’t get the discovery channel so I haven’t seen that particular program! [:(]

Dave, that is some very impressive work! Great job on the 'pit. I was not aware of the fit issues with this kit. I have one in my stash (the ‘C’ version with the Julia) and what has kept me from starting it was what looked like some fairly complex masking around the canopy glass pieces. I paid particular attention to that area on your builds and it looks flawless! Very nicely done! [tup]

Thanks Mike! [:)] For normal masking I always use scotch tape but for complex curves like these ones I use Swanny’s method with thin strips of masking tape. Just make sure you use tape with lots of stick to it. Some of the painters tape I used started to lift after awhile. The kit with the Julia is one of the ones that is waiting to be completed. Let me know when you’re ready to start and I’ll fill you in on all the problem areas. [yuck]
