For what? Are you asking for a brand or type?
As far as type: For the past I have used almost exclusively Enamels…I am phasing into some of the acrylics now. Used to be IMHO that Acrylics were great for kids with snap-tites but not for the serious modelers…Well with various companies producing great acrylics that flow well and dont run like thier predecessors(Such as OLD Testors Acrylics)…I am switching over slowly but surely. I now have some Tamiya Acrylics(which requires a special thinner DONT USE TAP WATER!), Im using some of the Testors Acryl but I still have a lot of enamels to use up.
Acrylics also dry quicker than enamels.

There’s really no real rule as to which paints are better. In truth, it’s personal preference. Just remember that some thinners contained in some types of paint can eat through the surface of paint layers already on a model.
Water basec acrylics can be damaged by some enamels and Automotive acrylics and enamels can be damaged by automotive acrylics.
There are many paint manufacturers that make very good products. Many of us are limited to the paints sold by the local hobby shop - they can’t stock every color of every brand of paint, can they?
Generally, go for a good enamel (Model Master and Xtra-Color make good paint) and for water based acrylics, Tamiya, Gunze Sangyo are both very good (apologies to the other manufacturers that make fine paints but my local hobby shop doesn’t stock).
An Airbrush is probably the one tool you can have that will make the largest difference to the quality of the finished product. If you don’t have one, go and get one and learn to use it. Kalmbach sell very good books on how to airbrush, and FSM often has how-to articles.

historyinscale,i just want to know kinds of paints.i got about 17 enamel paints[kind you get at like walmart],but they suck,they keep smering away ,so im starting to buy acryl paints,model master paints,i got like 3 of them,
I really like Gunze but I have to order them from Squadron as I cannot buy them locally. I also use Testors Acryl and Testors Model Masters. Tamiya (at least for me) has been extremely difficult to match up to the Federal Standard colors so I do not use them. So my order of preference is Gunze, Testors Acryl, and Model Master. I like acrylics much better than enamels. For one thing they are much easier to clean up and Gunze, for some reason, applies and looks better than Testor Acryl. Just my opinion of course.

For Acrylics paints I’ve found that Polly Scale has the most selection and is really easy to shoot, a little distilled water and shoot away, that’s better than Testor or Tamiya’s but they too have good paints but the down fall is that they need a special thinner for their acrylics, for Enamals is Model Masters for me because the main paint I used to shoot was Floquil (and their thinner Doi-Sol was great for all brands of enamals it made the paint bite better) they also produced Polly S & Polly Scale piants but Testors now owns them and the Floquil colors are now showing up as Model Masters, but the reason I liked Floquil was because of their selection too as with Polly Scales and their down fall is that they are about $.50 more a bottle then Testors MM brand
You’d have to try a little of all of the brands before you choose you favorate brand I choose Floquil/Polly brand but I’ve tried just about them all Gunze has good selection but expensive like Polly, Tamiya, and Humbol is really good too but they are limited on places who sell them and their paint comes in a little tin that makes the paint last about a life time if you don’t use it all on a model and the paint is finer then the Testors brand
If a HobbyTown or Hobby Lobby is near you they more or less carry the Testors brand but to get the other brands you might have to check out Squadron.com or Greathobby.com websites

Hmmmm I’ve only had that problem a few times and here is what I found(from my experience)to be the cause…I either didnt wash the mold release off of the plastic(You do this by soaking in warm soapy dishwater,then rinsing) or I didnt get all the soap off of the plastic…or the paints weren’t mixed well enough.
With my enamels I drop 2 bb’s into the paint jars(1/4 FL oz) and shake well.I drop 4 into the 1/2 Fl oz(Model Master size) The BB’s help ensure good mixture! Now I havent tried this with Acrylics because of possible corrosion…due to any water content in the paints formula(If any?).
Not sure if this helps but Im sure it cant hurt!

ya ill try it,it helping.but im not painting,but i cant wait to paint like a tank,im going to do the detail i seen i the november one,with tape ,i just need to get those paints.
i hope i dont mess up tho,do you know if there is a thing if you mess up,it just goes away.

I have always used enamels for model aircraft because thats what i grew up with.
Humbrol were the only modelers enamels that were available over here then so ive kept on using them.
The one other thing I can say is …DO NOT…I say again…DO NOT… use household paints in any form. The pigments (colours) are not ground as finely an those for model and art work.
Keep trying you can only get better!
